Rimless Frames

Rimless glasses are held to the ear pieces and the nose pieces by tightly-strung, nearly invisible wire, giving the glasses an airy, almost floating look. On the 23rd November 2011 we carried out a Street Survey to find out if wearing glasses changes the way people see you.  With photos of five different people (both with and without their glasses) we asked passers by to rate a selection of the images based on the following traits: -

• Attractiveness
• Intelligence
• Trustworthiness
• Employability
• Sex Appeal

Even we were amazed by the results.

100% of the models were considered by the public to be sexier, more employable, trustworthy AND intelligent when wearing their specs.  But even more interestingly, our study found that it was men who benefited most from embracing their specs.

Women considered the male models on average 38% more attractive and 35% more intelligent when wearing glasses.  One male model was perceived as a whopping 75% sexier when seen in specs.  Men in general were considered to be 60% MORE SEXY by women.  With figures like that it seems like a no-brainer – If you want to turn heads, you've got to make a 'spectacle' of yourself.

Survey Results

On average our models were said to be:

• 14% more attractive with glasses
• 22% more intelligent with glasses
• 17% more trustworthy with glasses
• 23% more employable with glasses
• 27% more sexy with glasses

Women were asked to rate two male models both with, and without, their glasses.  Women said the two male models appeared, on average:

• 38% more attractive
• 35% more intelligent
• 60% sexier

…while wearing glasses.
 

Women said that one of our male models was:

• 48% more attractive
• 49% more intelligent
• 75% sexier

…while wearing glasses.

This week is London Fashion Week, so with the help of our latest guest writer, we thought we'd take a look at the event, it's brief history and what it has become today.

How London Fashion Week Became the Show it is Today

London is considered one of the “Big Four” fashion week sites, along with Milan, New York and Paris. London Fashion Week celebrates its 26^th year in 2011; from its origins in 1984, this show has been a “must do” event for fashionistas and designers from around the world.

Origins:

The first London Fashion Week event was produced in 1984, and featured a diverse group of designers, including David Fielden, Ghost and John Galliano. The week featured catwalk shows and fashion industry booths and events, and was produced by the British Fashion Council.

Early Years:

• Designer Katherine Hammet becomes the first to receive the newly minted Designer of the Year Award, offered in 1984 by the British Fashion Council.
• In 1985 the British government agrees to sponsor London Fashion Week and British designers, thanks to prompting by the editor of the UK version of Vogue and a select group of established. designers.
• In 1989, supermodel Kate Moss heads down the catwalk for the first time at the age of 15; her first appearance is at a Galliano show during London Fashion Week.
• The Princess of Wales, Diana, attends the British Fashion Awards and shows for the first time in 1990; her attendance brings worldwide attention to the British fashion industry.

1990s:

• London Fashion Week changes venues several times, ending up in the National History Museum. The show adds more exhibition space and press space during this time as well.
• In 1993, the British Fashion Council reaches out to educate and give recognition to new and upcoming designers by offering the opportunity to show during Fashion Week. Designer Alexander McQueen is one of the first to participate in the program, which will continue to encourage and include new designers and labels each year.
• Like many fashion-related businesses and events worldwide, London Fashion Weeks suffers setbacks in the early-1990s, thanks to an overall recession.
• Many fashion houses and designers are criticized in the mid-1990s for using near-anorexic models to showcase couture. Several initiatives and funds designed to promote healthy body image are founded in response by the late 1990s, including the Model Health Enquiry.
• Some of Britain’s most fashion forward designers are lured from London Fashion Week to larger shows in Paris, New York and Milan. It will take almost a decade for London Fashion Week to rebound from this defection.

2000-Today:

• In 2009, the British Fashion Council moves a revitalized London Fashion Week to its current venue in Somerset House.
• By 2010, London Fashion Week was responsible for almost £ 100 million in orders, including garments, shoes, handbags and accessories like sunglasses and eyeglasses.
• The current day London Fashion Week has grown exponentially to include 68 “official” catwalk shows and numerous unofficial offsite events as well. London Fashion Week currently draws in excess of 5,000 industry visitors per year, including designers, students, press and buyers.
• In 2010, London Fashion Week became the first major fashion event to fully embrace the Internet; the entire weeks’ worth of catwalk shows are broadcast to a worldwide audience over the web.

FAR FROM being a turn-off, girls who wear glasses are MORE likely to stoke up a steamy session with the man of their dreams, according to the results of our Sexy Specs Survey.

The overwhelming majority – 92.7% – of men questioned said they find women who wear glasses sexy, proving that specs aren’t the barrier to passion, as so commonly perceived.

And – not surprisingly – the “sexy librarian/school mistress/secretary in glasses” image remains a firm fantasy-fueller with over 80% agreeing that the look floats their boat.

Four eyes are also better than two for women with over 70% saying they would be more attracted to a man if he’s wearing glasses because he looks friendly, sophisticated and intelligent.

On a day when everyone seems to be thinking of love and romance, this news should boost the confidence of anyone who feels self-conscious about wearing glasses.  Although they are in the minority, our research indicates that many people still think they look less attractive to the opposite sex if they wear glasses – if only they knew!

Women were less confident about their appeal to men whilst wearing glasses with nearly 40% believing it made them less attractive and nearly 35% saying they would go without glasses to make themselves more desirable.  Men, on the other hand, were more at ease with just over a quarter rating their chances of success as higher if they didn’t wear specs.

Glasses have now become a big fashion accessory, with practically every design house having their own range of frames; wearing specs is no longer so closely associated with being a geek or a plain Jane, so come on boys and girls, its time to face facts: Specs ARE Sexy!
 

Ladies (and adventurous gentlemen), you have probably noticed by now that eye makeup becomes much more difficult when glasses are in play. Eyes can become dwarfed behind stylish frames, but we still want the best of both worlds – gorgeous frames and gorgeous eyes.

Here are some tips to help your eyes stand out, even when they are behind the glass.

First: the concealor

Glasses can cast shadows on your face, so it’s important to minimize your chance of “dark circles.” Use a concealor that is a shade lighter than your foundation, and blend it all over your eye area, under your eyes and on your eyelids. This creates an even-toned palette to work with, and the concealor can act as a primer for eye shadow.

Second: eyebrows

If you already have well-defined eyebrows, you can skip this step, but if not, you may want to use an eyebrow liner to fill in your brows. Remember that your glasses will call attention to your eyebrows, so they should be perfect. If you hold a pencil up to the side of your nose, you will see the point where your brows should start – where the pencil lines up with your brow line. Then turn the pencil so that is lines up with the side of your nose and the corner of your eye. Where the pencil meets your eyebrow – that is the spot to end your brow definition. (This may sound overwhelming, especially where tweezers are involved. There’s no shame in consulting a cosmetologist.)

Next: the highlighter

You can use a specific highlighter product, but any light-colored eye shadow will do. Light colors will cause your eyes to “pop” – in a good way. Put the highlighter on your lid, and under your brow bone. Many people think that the highlighter doesn’t “show up much” behind the glasses, so they skip it, but it is one of the best things you can do for your eyes. A light-colored eye shadow under the brow will truly illuminate your eyes. In comparison, the rest of the color is unimportant. If you do nothing else, use a highlighter.

Eye-Liner

Eye-liner is also important. Use eyeliner to create definition around your eyes. You can experiment with this and see how much or how little you want to use. Obviously, the more you use, the more dramatic the effect.

False eyelashes (optional)

False Eyelashes are totally optional. They do create a dramatic look, but might be too time-consuming for your everyday routine. However, you might want to avoid mascara on your bottom lashes, as this can contribute to dark circles. Also, be sure that your mascara is completely dry before putting your glasses on, so that it does not smudge onto your lenses.

You do have a lot of options, so feel free to experiment and see what works for you. Just know that with the right eye makeup application, you don’t have to worry about your glasses dwarfing anything!

There are certain fashion accessories that modern culture obsesses over, and at the top of that list are glasses. Although technically these are items that are worn for corrective reasons, the same way one would wear a hearing aid, they have their own school of style. What we call "nerdy" glasses is the best example. Classic styles have been created throughout the years, which society relates to those studious, clever nerds whom everyone secretly wants to be like. While constantly reading and studying may be boring, wearing the nerdy glasses is easy, fun and nowadays a flattering accessory.

Classic Black-Rimmed Wayfarers

The wayfarer design for glasses has become a quintessential part of American accessorizing. Not only are they the foundation for some of the most popular sunglasses ever, but with prescription lenses, they create the ultimate uni-sex nerd glasses. When most people think of nerd glasses, whether it be those worn by Buddy Holly or the heroes in "Revenge of the Nerds," they usual think of these black-rimmed frames. Although they may have started off as glasses for legitimate nerds back in the 1950's, they are now the spectacles of choice for any self-respecting filmmaker or indie rock musician, whether it be Woody Allen or Rivers Cuomo. To up the ante, and get the most nerdy-ness out of the black-rimmed wayfarers, it's customary to add a small piece of masking tape around the frames, right between the eyes.

Gazelle Glasses

Gazelle glasses have been in and out of fashion since the early 1980's. These types of frames were originally designed for the elderly, which is why the lenses are so large, but it's their square shape that gives them their distinct, somewhat comical appearance and makes them so popular among the younger crowd. The trend really took over when Run DMC wore them as part of their group uniform, and nowadays, anyone from young, indie actors to professional football players can be seen sporting a pair of these over-sized glasses. Although many a girl has pulled these types of frames off, the nerdy gazelle glasses are typically worn by men.

Cat's Eye Glasses

Although there's no doubt that some men have tried, the cat's eye glasses are a nerd accessory that is, for the most part, for girls only. It's also a timeless classic that dates back to the 1940's. The name describes the shape of these spectacles. As opposed to a rounded, even shape, the frames curve into a pointed edge on the outer tips of the lenses, giving them a feline feel. Well they may not have been considered "nerdy" when originally conceived, their now-vintage aesthetic has made them popular among pop-culture nerds everywhere, especially those who love all things 1950's. The more hip versions of these nerdy frames are typically bedazzled with rhinestones around the edges and come in an array of colors aside from the original black.

By 1953, when Marilyn Monroe starred as Pola in “How To Marry A Millionaire,” the ‘sexy librarian look’ had found its archetype.  She is a kind of gender-reversed Clark Kent in this film.  Playing a woman who is embarrassed to be seen in glasses, Marilyn Monroe establishes the tantalizing aesthetic and sets the tone for the next several decades of women’s frame-styles with her catwoman frames in the film.  She quotes Dorothy Parker, saying that, “Men don’t pay much attention to a woman in glasses,” but nothing could be further from the truth in this case.  In the movie, the man who falls in love with her glasses wins her heart.  A sort of double irony, in this specific instance, is that Marilyn Monroe was extremely nearsighted in real life, and often wore glasses at times when she was out of the limelight.  Later on in the 1960’s Batman series, Julie Newmer as Catwoman and Yvonne Craig as Batgirl – both of whom have ‘librarian alter-egos cement this cliché.

‘Sexy librarian’ generally appear as some kind of permutation of Pola’s ‘catwoman’ frames, but the point is not the specfic style of the frame, but that the frames are noticeable.  When she is wearing those frames she is not trying to hide the fact that she’s wearing glasses.  She’s even flaunting it, maybe a wee bit.  

Like garters, glasses are supposed to be sexy on women because men want to take them off of that woman.  But this oversimplifies the fetish.  There is something absolutely paralyzing about the object itself – be it garter or glasses – that entrances the male gaze.  That is, after all, the definition of a fetish.  “Any object…that causes a habitual erotic response or fixation.”  Pola’s glasses fit the bill here.

The simple fact is that eyeglasses are sexy.  Or at least: they can be sexy. Some women refuse to wear eyeglasses because they think it might make them less attractive. It doesn’t. Men find eyeglasses appealing for several reasons. They add a layer of mystery. They highlight intelligence. Men are stupid: they may not notice how naturally intelligent you are unless you’re wearing glasses.  Or conversely, they may think you are intelligent simply because of the fact that you are wearing glasses with no further evidence.  Glasses draw attention to a woman’s eyes. In a good conversation, a woman’s eyes tend to be the part of the body that men focus on, and glasses, literally, frame the eyes. A woman wearing eyeglasses may seem more insightful and focused. The design of the frames can divulge a few intimate secrets. The woman might want to convey a sense of seriousness, but if she’s wearing animal-print frames, she’s giving the world a hint that she has a wild side. If the frames have a tint of color, it boosts the effect of the irises’ natural pigment. 

The most important part of choosing glasses is making sure you are confident in the ones you choose. Confidence shows, and is extremely sexy. Choose the frames and lenses that cry out to you, whatever look you go for. Wear your sunglasses with pride and they will add a mysterious magnetism to your look.

The progress made in the eyewear industry has made it possible for people to correct their vision disorders in elegant and fashionable ways with just about all the top designer fashion brands jumping in and playing a roll.

The introduction of lightweight frames and lenses have enabled the change in attitude towards glasses.  Thin lenses replaced the thick ones, which were uncomfortable and negatively affected the wearer’s self-esteem. The ability to offer various lens curvatures in a variety of frames empowers the wearer to achieve almost any desired look.

Advancements in lens technologies and the ever increasing wide ranges of eyeglasses are extremely welcomed considering the high percentage of people with eyesight problems. According to a study by the National Eye Institute about 64 percent of the U.S. adult population wears glasses. The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey showed that the most encountered vision deficiencies are astigmatism, which causes fuzzy vision and affects 36 percent, and myopia (short sightedness), with 33 percent of respondents having problems seeing objects located at certain distances. Fashion design houses, such as Versace, Gucci, Emporio Armani, Ray-Ban and Prada, have being making efforts to offer customers eyeglasses that highlight one’s elegance and are always up-to-date to the latest trends.

Eyeglasses can help someone boost their self-confidence or to make a powerful personal statement of self-expression. All in all, one can look fabulous and express their style while correcting a vision deficiency.

R&B / Pop singer songwriter Rihanna has a string of hits to her name since she made the big time with her number one singles 'SOS' and 'Umbrella', the most controversial hit involving an alleged incident of domestic violence from then-boyfriend Chris Brown, who later pleaded guilty and was ordered to stay fifty yards from Rihanna.

Anyway, back on topic.  Here we have a great image of Rihanna wearing some very cool and trendy Carrera Endurance Sunglasses (colour JO7/LF) in the music video to her number one hit 'Rude Boy' from her recent album Rated R.

Carrera Endurance sunglasses seem to be everywhere right now and have appeared in a number of other music videos worn by artists such as Christina Aguilera and Usher.  The Carrera brand of sunglasses has also been worn by Lady Gaga and Alicia Keys to name but a few.

It really is refreshing to see so many celebrities wearing a brand of sunglasses which are actually within most people's price range.  Carrera sunglasses really are great value for money and were a popular choice with music festival goers during the Summer 2010 festival season.

Rihanna's new album Loud will be hitting the shops (or digital download stores) in November this year, but in the mean time why not check her out wearing the Carrera Endurance sunglasses in the Rude Boy video below.

Lady Gaga has been looking to extend the range of her activities and start a career as a designer.  The singer said that she will take part in two collections at the same time.

Fashion retailer Forever 21 plans to release a collection of Crime Scene Tape t-shirts to match the half-naked Lady Gaga as seen in her acclaimed video for the hit «Telephone».

Lady Gaga has always caused quite a bit of stir with her unusual and often crazy accessories, the popular singer has been in talks to create her own line of sunglasses for top fashion designer Linda Farrow – one of the “Coolest brands in the UK” (2005).  Taking into consideration Lady Gaga’s passion for such extraordinary style, we can assume that her collection of sunglasses would be somewhat interesting, to say the least.

 
The sunglasses of British designer Linda Farrow are created for fans of '70s disco.  Large, bright, a little pretentious – these glasses were often used in fashion shows with other famous brands such as Emilio Pucci, Guy Laroche, Balenciaga and Sonya Rykiel.

In 2003 Linda Farrow’s son Simon Jablon, using the models of glasses which his mother created almost a half century ago, created the new collection “Linda Farrow Vinatage”.

Lady Gaga’s personality, appearance and style have made her a phenomenon and one of the most successful artists in pop music history.  Her choices in sunglasses, crazy outfits and heels of unprecedented heights have all helped contribute to her eccentricity and ability to shock the audience with her appearance.  It is no wonder that Lady Gaga received the title "Icon of style 2009".

In the video "Bad Romance", Lady Gaga can be seen wearing Carrera "Champion" sunglasses.  With the highly unique and recognizable aviator shape of the "Champion" sunglasses, Lady Gaga's fearlessness and confidence is never in doubt.

It seems that nothing is too far when it comes to her choice of outfit.  These Linda Farrow Disney-inspired Mickey Mouse sunglasses must have attracted the attention of her younger fans.

At time of writing, there is not much information about the cooperation between Lady Gaga and the Linda Farrow brand, however, the singer has gone on record to say that she can not wait to make her own collection, in her own original style within the next year.  We wish her good luck.

Even if you haven’t worn 3D glasses since you were 16, you might well be using them this Christmas.  With the release of Robert Zemeckis’ Scrooge ‘A Christmas Carol‘ starring the multi-voice talents of rubber-faced Jim Carey and the ‘said-to-be’ movie phenomenon of the decade James Cameron’s ‘Avatar’, we will all be donning a pair of 3D polarized lenses, in order to watch the action.

3D as I’m sure you know, is a way of giving the illusion of depth perception in a film or image, it has been around since the 1950s and saw a re-surge in the 1980s, but mostly in American cinemas.  We did however get a snippet of it on British TV recently with the television program “The Queen in 3D”, of course it was pointless as the majority of people watching it most likely didn’t own 3D glasses, but the concept was interesting.

And for those of you who might have recently watched Coraline in 3D at home with a pair of crappy cardboard glasses, covered in kiddies finger prints, you probably found that that 3D wasn’t that great, it had a bluey grey tone, was only effective during the opening credits and since the settings on most TVs have to be perfect to get the full effect of the 3D experience, it really wasn’t worth it.  (Note: view the video below at youtube to see it in 3D).

But i recently watched the Avatar trailer which was playing in 3D and was blown away.  The effects in the movie were like nothing I have seen before.  The depth really brought you into the movie and the scenery of Pandora was stunning.  The effects, although running at 100mph, were detailed and visually mind blowing.  It made me hold my breath at more than one point, which hasn’t happened with a movie since Aliens, and this was just the damn trailer.

This Belgian fashion designer has maintained a notoriously low profile throughout his career; he has never had his picture taken and hides backstage after his fashion shows.  Getting an interview with the man himself is like trying to build a life-sized Empire State Building entirely out of Lego in the middle of an earthquake, since any media contact with the designer is via a fax machine alone.

Martin Margiela’s designs revolt against the luxurious fashion world with garments of oversized proportions such as long arms and seams and hems on the outside, a style which can be clearly seen in these crazy sunglasses.

Now I won’t lie, I did enjoy the recent Sacha Baron Cohen yuck-fest of a movie that was Brüno, I laughed and laughed until my jaw ached, but I don’t know much about fashion.  It seems to me, that these single lens sunglasses are designed to make a statement and probably only one that will be seen on the catwalk.  They seem completely impractical in the real world; I mean where the hell does your nose go?  The tiny nose-piece (see insert) must rest on the tip of your nostrils.  I would imagine these sunglasses would fly from your face as soon as you turn your head.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but looking at the front view of these so-called sunnies the only thing missing is a set of windscreen wipers!

More Crazy Martin Margiela Sunglasses

Okay, I’m guessing Martin Margiela doesn’t refer to these sunglasses as ‘Crazy’ himself, but while we’re on the subject I also found these…

Although I can’t see myself wearing these nutty shield style sunglasses there is something a bit more acceptable about them.  I guess it’s because they look a bit like some of the mad plastic headgear worn by the dancers in a Kylie Minogue music video or something out of the movie Minority Report.  There’s something very Sci-Fi about these, they really do belong in a movie or music video.
