So, is it really moving or not? Well if you’re reading this, you’ve probably worked out that it’s not, that it’s just an optical illusion, created using perspective and colour to disorientate your mind and trick your senses into believing that it is really moving. In this instance, our mind’s eye, or our sense of perception alters what we are seeing by what we believe to be true, but our mind’s eye can also refer to our own internal perception of ourselves. Our internal mind’s eye gives us our sense of what we believe to be real about ourselves, how the world operates about us and how we are perceived by others. This sense of internal reality differs from one person to the next giving us our own perception of what sort of person we are. Our internal perceptions can be referred to as self-beliefs. Beliefs that we hold to be true about ourselves: I’ve never been good at maths; I have no confidence; I find it difficult to motivate myself or alternately, I’m a really good mathematician; I have overwhelming confidence and I’m extremely motivated and determined.

Our internal perception is largely laid down in childhood, but does go on to be influenced by our experiences as we progress through life. As a child we pick up on what other’s believe to be true of ourselves and this happens so much that we take that view to be true and defining of who we really are; for instance if someone is always commenting on what lovely hair you have, you will no doubt grow up thinking you have fabulous hair. Unfortunately though, the negative is also true, if someone always comments on how chubby you are, the chances are you will truly believe that you will always be on the tubby side. Our self-beliefs are also self-perpetuating, if you constantly believe you aren’t good at something, you are more than likely to feel overwhelming fear and failure regarding that issue, which further thwarts your attempts to overcome your difficulty, further emphasising that you weren’t meant to succeed in that area of your life.

However, as a hypnotherapist in Kent (UK), I believe there is a way to overcome such limiting self-beliefs through the use of hypnotherapy and mindfulness practice. Hypnotherapy uses the power of your mind’s eye to imagine and visualise, helping you make life-enhancing changes. Mindfulness practice also frees you from past self-beliefs, encouraging you to live life in the present moment, enabling you to experience the world with fresh eyes, giving you clarity of who you really are and what a truly beautiful world we live in.

Get Your Sunnies Ready for the Australian GP

It’s the Australian GP this weekend and that means it’s the start of a new Formula One season. Lewis Hamilton will be looking to defend his first World Championship, but its not going to be easy with all the new rule changes coming into effect this year.

No one is more excited about the new F1 season and the Aussie GP than me, I was even lucky enough to attend the event myself back in 2004 during the Schumacher glory days.

Formula One Fashion – The Drivers and their Sunglasses

We couldn’t miss the opportunity to use the new Formula 1 season as an excuse to look at the drivers of the sport and write a little bit about them while we look at the fashions of the sport and see what sunglasses (or prescription glasses) are worn by the drivers down the pit lane.

Lewis Hamilton

Lewis Hamilton has become a household name in his short two-year Formula One career, he certainly had us all on the edge of our seats last year when he took the title decider to the last corner of the last lap to win the World Championship. To say that it was a nail-biter is the understatement of the century, you literally couldn’t make it up!

The youngest ever F1 World Champion is more often that not seen walking around the F1 paddock without any sunglasses at all, but on the occasions when he does don his shades it seems that Lewis appears to be a big fan of various styles of Oakley sunglasses.

Lewis Hamilton is a bit of a lucky boy really; he can pretty much wear any style of Sunglasses and get away with it, although I think these Aviators are just the right kind of cool for a top-level racing driver like Lewis. Here he is with his Pussycat Doll girlfriend Nicole Scherzinger at Nelson Mandela’s 90th Birthday celebrations in June 2008. Some guys really do have it all!

Felipe Massa

Ferrari driver Felipe Massa came within one point of winning the championship last year and in fact thought he had it in the bag when he won the final race of the season at his home Grand Prix in Brazil, only to be told seconds later that Lewis Hamilton had overtaken Timo Glock on the last corner to gain the 5th place he needed to win the championship. For Massa it must have been like opening all his presents at Christmas and then having them immediately snatched away and made to watch as they are thrown into a compactor and crushed to a cube.

Regarded by many, including the legendary Formula One commentator Martin Brundle as “The Most Improved Driver on the Grid” Massa would have made a very worthy World Champion, actually winning more races than eventual champion Lewis Hamilton during the course of the season. Felipe Massa is my personal tip to become World Champion in 2009, and good luck to him.

Felipe Massa can often be seen around the F1 paddock brandishing a pair of Ray-Ran sunglasses such as these RB3362 – Cockpit Aviators or RB3311 Shield style sunglasses.

Kimi Raikkonen

The 2007 World Champion and Ferrari driver Kimi Raikkonen undeniably has bags of talent but no longer is he the number one driver in the Ferrari team since Felipe Massa has proved himself to be such a worthy contender to the title.

In 2008 Kimi was accused of lacking interest in the title and there were question marks over his motivation in Formula One as he consistently under-performed despite his incredible ability as a racing driver.

Perhaps if he had spent less time worrying about his image and promoting his own brand of Tag Heuer Speedway sunglasses (above) he might be a double world champion by now. Lets hope he is a bit more settled this year as it would be great to see Kimi back in the hunt with the other contenders again.

Kimi Raikkonen’s own design of Tag Heuer sunglasses can be seen modelled by the man himself in black or red (above). Not sure about those square-framed white sunglasses though (bottom left), they remind me of the old-fashioned 3D glasses you used to get in the cinemas in the 1980’s!

Fernando Alonso

Double World Champion Fernando Alonso was brilliant to watch last season, especially as the Renault team developed the car to race winning ability towards the end of the season. If the team is as good this year as it was at the end of last season, Alonso might find himself in with a decent shot of a third world championship by the end of the year. Martin Brundle refers to Alonso as “The most complete driver on the grid” and I have to agree with him.

Here, Fernando Alonso can be seen wearing a variety of sporty Quiksilver sunglasses to varying degrees of success over the course of the last few years.

Robert Kubica

BMW Sauber driver Robert Kubica actually stood an outside chance of winning the championship towards the end of the season last year and is definitely going to be one to watch this year. His driving ability is not in question, if anything, its down to the team to provide him with the support that he argued was lacking last year as they concentrated on developing the car for the 2009 season. I for one, really cant wait to see if it has paid off and they can provide him with the equipment needed to stand a decent chance of becoming a championship contender this year.

F1 racing driver Robert Kubica is rarely seen wearing glasses and even here, his Oakley sunglasses are partially concealed below his cap.

Heikki Kovalainen

Lewis Hamilton’s McLaren teammate Heikki Kovalainen has got a lot to prove this year as he aims to up his game by winning more races. Heikki wears Zerorh+ RH 602 wraparound sunglasses that are probably more suitable for snowy mountain conditions rather than an F1 paddock.

I must admit though, I’m loving those Harry Potter-like beer bottle glasses! Thank God he doesn’t need these to drive.

Jenson Button

Good old Jense was saved from the ever-growing queues signing on the dole down his local Job Centre at the eleventh hour when his Honda team was taken over by Ross Brawn and rebadged Brawn GP. Early signs are that the new Brawn car is potentially the fasted on the grid and at the time of writing, Jenson Button is favourite with the bookies to win the Australian GP.

Formula 1 racing driver Jenson Button is nearly always seen wearing Ray-Ban sunglasses. Here he models a selection including Ray-Ban Wayfarer 2140 Sunglasses, Ray-Ban 3026 Aviator Sunglasses and Ray-Ban 3362 Cockpit Aviator Sunglasses alongside team mate Rubens Barrichello.

Rubens Barrichello

Jenson Button’s teammate Rubens Barrichello, one of the nicest guys to ever drive a Formula One car is a bit of a Ray-Ban connoisseur choosing some square-shaped plastic Ray-Bans and some Metal framed Ray-Ban sunglasses here.

Nick Heidfeld

The bearded BMW Sauber driver Nick Heidfeld wears a variety of sunglasses including Prada Linea Rossa PS51HS (Prada Red) sunglasses, Emporio Armani sunglasses or Diesel DS 0085 Sunglasses with a wood finish; generally Heidfeld tends to go for the fashionable oversized frame styles.

Mark Webber

Aussie Red Bull Renault driver Mark Webber is a big fan of Oakley Sunglasses.

Nico Rosberg

Williams driver Nico Rosberg normally wears Aviator Style Sunglasses, unless he’s dressing up like Elvis Presley!

Nelson Piquet Jr

Renault Formula 1 racing driver Nelson Piquet Jr. fancies himself as a bit of a model wearing all these sunglasses, including Penguin and Ray-Ban 3026 Aviator Sunglasses (the same as Jenson Button).

Jarno Trulli

Toyota driver Jarno Trulli is normally seen wearing sporty, colourful designs when it comes to sunglasses, usually with coloured, mirrored lenses, except for the odd occasion when he changes it up a bit with some Aviator Sunglasses.

Sebastien Bourdais

Toro Rosso driver Sebastien Bourdais is one of the most successful drivers around, winning the Champ Car World Series (sometimes referred to as the American version of Formula One) 4 times in a row.

The French man is one of those rare drivers who wears prescription glasses even when racing (as opposed to contact lenses). More recently he wears square-shaped rimless glasses, which no doubt give him the best possible unobstructed view for driving/racing.

Giancarlo Fisichella

Force India Formula 1 racing driver Giancarlo Fisichella is often seen wearing some unusual styles of sunglasses, but I suppose when you’re Italian and you’re a Formula One driver, you can get away with it.

Adrian Sutil

Force India Formula 1 racing driver Adrian Sutil wears Ray-Ban sunglasses and generally goes for the fashionable large styles.

Final Thoughts

We are hoping for another great season this year with even closer racing under the new rules and hopefully a lot less politics.

Our predictions for the year are a tight championship battle between, Hamilton, Massa, Raikkonen, Alonso, and Kubica and we might also get a bit of Jenson Button, and Sebastian Vettel thrown thrown into the mix here and there, which should be fun. Ultimately though, I feel Massa’s performance from last year will continue and he should come through and win it in the end. What do you guys think?

Successful Glasses Wearing Celebrities

We’ve taken a look at some popular celebrities in the public eye from historically to the current day to bring you a list of some of the most popular glasses wearing celebrities.

Buddy Holly

In his short 22 year life, Buddy Holly made an unforgettable impression on the new music called rock ‘n’ roll in the 1950′s, but went on to influence several generations of artists including Paul McCartney, Bob Dylan, and Bruce Springsteen. Pictured wearing his big chunky plastic frames he has been quoted by John Lennon as “Making it OK to wear glasses” and also influenced Elton John to wear glasses during his performances.

John Lennon

A founding member of the band The Beatles and a successful solo musician with such acclaimed albums as John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band and Imagine and iconic songs including “Give Peace a Chance” and “Imagine”. His round metal framed glasses are still popular today with many retailers offering Lennon ‘look-a-likes’. The John Lennon influence is as strong today as it ever was with Oasis front man Liam Gallagher idolising Lennon to the point of wearing similar glasses himself.

Elton John

In his four-decade career, Elton John has been one of the dominant forces in rock and popular music, especially during the 1970s. He has sold over 200 million records making him one of the most successful artists of all time. According to a recent servey carried out by Specsavers Elton John was named as Britain’s most iconic glasses wearer, admitting to buying over 20,000 pairs of glasses!

Sarah Palin

Governor of the US state of Alaska and more recently John McCain’s running mate for the 2008 presidential election. Sarah caused a stir in 2008 after appearances on TV and in magazines wearing different pairs of stylish glasses including the square rimless pair displayed above right which saw members of the general public looking to buy similar Sarah Palin ‘look-a-like’ glasses.

Tina Fey

Creator and star of Emmy Award and Golden Globe winning US show 30 Rock, Tina Fey plays head writer Liz Lemon alongside Alec Baldwin for a late-night NBC comedy sketch show. 30 Rock has been a huge success Stateside and we at SelectSpecs are huge fans of the show which can currently be seen on Friday nights on Five USA (Sky channel 174 or Freeview channel 35). Tina has also starred in Mean Girls (2004) and Baby Mama (2008). Tina doesn’t necessarily wear the same glasses in everyday life, but does wear glasses of a similar theme: Plastic horn-rimmed-esque frames.

Bill Gates

Founder of software giant Microsoft and ranked as one of the world’s wealthiest people, Bill Gates has worn glasses throughout his career opting for that stereo-typical geek look in the early days with big lenses before changing his appearance with a more fashionable square-shaped, semi-rimless wire-framed pair of glasses.

Johnny Depp

The star of the Pirates of the Caribbean series, Sweeney Todd, and Edward Scissorhands. Girls love him and most men want to be him, Johnny Depp is often pictured wearing his trademark tortoise shell Horn Rimmed Glasses. These sunglasses are called Lemtosh and are made by Moscot Originals.

Dennis Taylor

Dennis Taylor is best known for winning the 1985 World Snooker Championship, beating Steve Davis on the final black during the 1985 World Snooker Championship final. Dennis Taylor is well known in the UK for his sense of humour and the over-sized glasses he wears while working his magic at the snooker table.

Gok Wan

Gok Wan who is well known in the world of fashion for working with celebrities including Brian Ferry and Vanessa Mae, and for his UK Channel 4 TV show “How to Look Good Naked”. Gok Wan is one of the most stylish spectacle wearers around usually choosing to wear a stylish square plastic frames.

Even Heroes Wear Glasses

Heroes is back on our TV at long last with the continuation of the 3rd season, titled Volume Four: Fugitives. As big fans of the show, we decided to look back at the characters of the top NBC / BBC show, paying special attention to Heroes who have perhaps less-than-heroic eyesight. It seems that despite all their special 'abilities' (I don't want to say 'powers') nobody is perfect, especially considering the fact that the show features a large number of impossibly good-looking Hollywood types! Or perhaps the glasses yielding superheroes of the show just wear glasses to make them look cool? You decide…

Noah Bennet (AKA: HRG)

Mr. Bennet, better known perhaps as Claire's dad (played by Jack Coleman), may not exactly have any special abilities himself but he has become one of the most recognizable characters of the show with his iconic Horn-Rimmed-Glasses earning him the nickname HRG. If you're looking for a pair of glasses that look like (possibly) the most distinctive glasses worn on television today then Selectspecs.com recommends these Ray Ban RB3016 frames (shown above). Hiro Nakaumura

His on-screen relationship with best friend and sidekick Ando offer some great light-hearted comic relief to the show which normally tends to deal with some otherwise fairly dark storylines. Hiro can often be seen pushing his metal, square shaped, semi-rimless glasses back into place with his finger. We're not sure where he gets these glasses made, perhaps they are from some super-tough interstellar material. His glasses remain in top condition despite all that Hiro has been through, not to mention the amount of times he seems to get punched in the face. Sylar (AKA: Gabriel Grey)

Sylar/Gabriel Grey (Zachary Quinto) is probably one of the most interesting characters of the show, especially now as we get into the swing of the new third season. Is he really evil or is he just misunderstood? Deep down, he doesn't really want to be bad and he does have his moments, but he has killed a few people along the way. He really is the man we love to hate. Its easy to forget that the Sylar we know today is quite different to the watch repairman he used to be. Since Gabriel began to acquire other people's 'abilities' through the use of his 'intuitive aptitude' (or to you and me, slicing off the top of one's head to examine the brain and learn how it works!) he no longer wears glasses under his new assumed name 'Sylar'. However, glimpses of the future version of Sylar show that he still needs his black-rimmed frames in everyday life.

Actor Zachary Quinto can often be seen wearing some interesting styles of glasses in real life. Although its unlikely that he will need them on the USS Enterprise when the new Star Trek film is released in 2009. Zachary Quinto will be playing the role of a young Spock in the J.J. Abrams production (The man behind other hits such as Lost, Fringe, Alias and Cloverfield). Bob Bishop

They say that money doesn't grown on trees, but Stephen Tobolowsky's character Bob doesn't really care because his ability 'alchemy' allows him to change the molecular composition of any material into gold. Kristen Bell (Elle)

Bob Bishop's daughter – Elle in the show was one of the more interesting characters to watch as her story unfolded. Her 'Electric Manipulation' ability allowed her to control, generate or absorb electric fields. Just like the Emperor at the end of Return of the Jedi, she could use her ability with deadly force. It didn't help matters that she was mentally unstable as a result of extensive testing by her father to research her abilities when she was young. Sadly for us, Elle was killed off by Sylar after he got what he wanted from her. Elle may not have worn glasses in the show, but just like Hayden Panettiere, actress Kristen Bell is a bit of a fan of her Ray Bans: -

All we need now is a character with X-Ray vision!

We receive parcels everyday containing customer’s own glasses that they have sent to us either to be re-glazed to replace damaged lenses or updated with their new prescription from a recent eye test, or because they would like us to perform a PD (Pupillary Distance) Check on an old pair of prescription glasses when ordering a new pair.

Today we received some glasses from one of our customers in a box which made us smile, so I just had to post it here.

Who would seriously own 20,000 pairs of glasses?

Elton John of course. According to a recent poll carried out by Specsavers Elton John has been named as Britain’s most iconic glasses wearer admitting to buying over 20,000 pairs of his trademark spectacles, including novelty glasses with windscreen wipers and flashing lights. Elton John beat competition from John Lennon and Dame Edna Everage to top the poll.

In the poll of 2,000 people, 31% revealed that they were influenced by famous people in their choice of frames, with some respondents admitting that they wore glasses to emulate their favorite celebrities even if they did not need them. Personally, I find it hard to imagine why so many people are being influenced by Dame Edna’s choice of fancy frames, perhaps we really ought to start stocking these as they may just be hot sellers!

Sarah Palin: She’s in Fashion

Whatever your opinions are of Sarah Palin, there’s no denying the fact that she has been grabbing the lion’s share of the headlines during the 2008 Presidential Election campaign. Republican US presidential candidate John McCain’s chosen running mate seems to have gained more attention than the man himself.

While Barack Obama appears to be easing ahead in the polls, its almost as if Sarah Palin is the new Britney Spears or Paris Hilton of Internet search terms. “Sarah Palin” is No. 1 on the list of mostly widely used political search terms, with about 1 in every 500 web searches containing her name. Although research by Hitwise suggests that popular searches include terms such as “Sarah Palin Vogue”, “Sarah Palin sexy photos”, “Sarah Palin bikini” and “Sarah Palin Nude”! (Make of that what you will…) (See the top 100 search terms here). Needless to say, even Hustler appears to be cashing in on her popularity by shooting a Sarah Palin themed porn film.

On a serious note, Sarah Palin has apparently even influenced some of our own customers into certain fashion purchasing decisions. At SelectSpecs.com we have seen an increase in popularity in glasses and frames that are similar in style to those worn by the attractive vice-presidential nominee hockey mom.

We would just like to take a moment out of our busy day here at the SelectSpecs offices to wish Team GB the best of luck at this year’s Summer Olympic Games in Beijing. Everyone agrees that Friday’s Opening Ceremony was quite spectacular. It’s hard to imagine how the Chinese managed to choreograph so many performers all at once or 2008 drummers. Somehow I don’t see London being able to achieve the same level of brilliance in 2012, that’s if we even get the facilities built in time. London certainly has a challenge on its hand to keep up with the incredible facilities in Beijing.

Anyway, once again, good luck to all our competitors and lets all hope for a great Olympic Games all around.
