Rimless Frames

Everyone's favourite Manic Pixie Dream Girl* – Zooey Deschanel stars in a new television show called New Girl wearing geeky glasses starting on Ch 4 in the UK tonight at 8:30pm.  There has always been something about the lovely Zooey that is so quirky and adorable and its great to see that the (500) Days of Summer actress has at last landed the leading role in a successful new TV series.

New Girl has been nominated for two Golden Globes in the US – ‘Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy’ and one for Zooey Deschanel herself – ‘Best Actress in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy’ so it should be well worth a look when it hits UK goggle-boxes tonight.

US smash hit comedy featuring Zooey Deschanel as Jess Daly, an adorable and charming girl in her late 20s.  After splitting up with her boyfriend, she moves in with three single guys she has never met before.

She's not used to hanging with the boys, especially at home, but as their relationships progress, Jess and the boys realise they need each other more than they ever thought they would, and form a charmingly dysfunctional family.

Jess has been described as Adorkable – dorkish while at the same time being completely adorable – and apparently fits the bill perfectly for the term Manic Pixie Dream Girl, so it sounds like fans of Zooey Deschanel's previous work (and who isn't?) should love this.

Geek Chic

In the show, Zooey Deschanel wears Oliver Peoples Wacks prescription glasses in a tortoiseshell colour.  Oliver Peoples describe this frame as a feminine design inspired by the styles worn by Buddy Holly and Roy Orbison.  They are handcrafted acetate material and features dual plaques on the front with substantial temples.  They also include the Oliver Peoples logo plaque laminated at the temple end.

Manic Pixie Dream Girl (MPDG) is a stock character in films.  Film critic Nathan Rabin, who coined the term after seeing Kirsten Dunst in Elizabethtown (2005), describes the MPDG as "that bubbly, shallow cinematic creature that exists solely in the fevered imaginations of sensitive writer-directors to teach broodingly soulful young men to embrace life and its infinite mysteries and adventures".  MPDGs are said to help their men without pursuing their own happiness, and such characters never grow up, thus their men never grow up.

MPDGs are usually static characters who have eccentric personality quirks and are unabashedly girlish.  They often serve as the romantic interest for a (usually brooding or depressed) leading male protagonist.  Prime examples are Natalie Portman's character in the movie Garden State or Zooey Deschanel's role in (500) Days of Summer.  Similar roles in other films, and the TV show New Girl have also been typified MPDG.

When buying new prescription glasses, you will need to know your Pupillary Distance (PD) measurement. Simply put, this is the distance between the centre of your pupils. To help you understand the process of measuring your PD we have put together a short video showing you (with the help of another person) how to measure both your reading and distance Pupillary Distance measurement.

How to measure a friend's distance PD:
1. Sit opposite your friend at arm's distance apart.
2. Place the PD ruler on the bridge of your friend's nose.
3. Close your right eye and look directly into your friend's right eye. Your friend should look into your open eye.
4. Note the measurement from the centre of the ruler to the centre of your friend's pupil in millimeters.
5. Repeat with your other eye open.
6. Add the numbers together to work out your friend's PD measurement.

How to measure a friend's reading PD:
1. Sit opposite your friend at arm's distance apart.
2. Place the PD ruler on the bridge of your friend's nose.
3. Your friend should hold a pen around 30cm in front of their face and focus on it with both eyes.
4. Note the measurement from the centre of the ruler to the centre of each of your friend's pupils in millimeters.
5. Add the numbers together to work out your friend's PD measurement.

Can I measure my PD myself using a mirror?
No, this will give you an inaccurate reading as your eyes will converge. We always recommend asking for help from a friend, family member or colleague to get an accurate reading.

There are certain fashion accessories that modern culture obsesses over, and at the top of that list are glasses. Although technically these are items that are worn for corrective reasons, the same way one would wear a hearing aid, they have their own school of style. What we call "nerdy" glasses is the best example. Classic styles have been created throughout the years, which society relates to those studious, clever nerds whom everyone secretly wants to be like. While constantly reading and studying may be boring, wearing the nerdy glasses is easy, fun and nowadays a flattering accessory.

Classic Black-Rimmed Wayfarers

The wayfarer design for glasses has become a quintessential part of American accessorizing. Not only are they the foundation for some of the most popular sunglasses ever, but with prescription lenses, they create the ultimate uni-sex nerd glasses. When most people think of nerd glasses, whether it be those worn by Buddy Holly or the heroes in "Revenge of the Nerds," they usual think of these black-rimmed frames. Although they may have started off as glasses for legitimate nerds back in the 1950's, they are now the spectacles of choice for any self-respecting filmmaker or indie rock musician, whether it be Woody Allen or Rivers Cuomo. To up the ante, and get the most nerdy-ness out of the black-rimmed wayfarers, it's customary to add a small piece of masking tape around the frames, right between the eyes.

Gazelle Glasses

Gazelle glasses have been in and out of fashion since the early 1980's. These types of frames were originally designed for the elderly, which is why the lenses are so large, but it's their square shape that gives them their distinct, somewhat comical appearance and makes them so popular among the younger crowd. The trend really took over when Run DMC wore them as part of their group uniform, and nowadays, anyone from young, indie actors to professional football players can be seen sporting a pair of these over-sized glasses. Although many a girl has pulled these types of frames off, the nerdy gazelle glasses are typically worn by men.

Cat's Eye Glasses

Although there's no doubt that some men have tried, the cat's eye glasses are a nerd accessory that is, for the most part, for girls only. It's also a timeless classic that dates back to the 1940's. The name describes the shape of these spectacles. As opposed to a rounded, even shape, the frames curve into a pointed edge on the outer tips of the lenses, giving them a feline feel. Well they may not have been considered "nerdy" when originally conceived, their now-vintage aesthetic has made them popular among pop-culture nerds everywhere, especially those who love all things 1950's. The more hip versions of these nerdy frames are typically bedazzled with rhinestones around the edges and come in an array of colors aside from the original black.

By 1953, when Marilyn Monroe starred as Pola in “How To Marry A Millionaire,” the ‘sexy librarian look’ had found its archetype.  She is a kind of gender-reversed Clark Kent in this film.  Playing a woman who is embarrassed to be seen in glasses, Marilyn Monroe establishes the tantalizing aesthetic and sets the tone for the next several decades of women’s frame-styles with her catwoman frames in the film.  She quotes Dorothy Parker, saying that, “Men don’t pay much attention to a woman in glasses,” but nothing could be further from the truth in this case.  In the movie, the man who falls in love with her glasses wins her heart.  A sort of double irony, in this specific instance, is that Marilyn Monroe was extremely nearsighted in real life, and often wore glasses at times when she was out of the limelight.  Later on in the 1960’s Batman series, Julie Newmer as Catwoman and Yvonne Craig as Batgirl – both of whom have ‘librarian alter-egos cement this cliché.

‘Sexy librarian’ generally appear as some kind of permutation of Pola’s ‘catwoman’ frames, but the point is not the specfic style of the frame, but that the frames are noticeable.  When she is wearing those frames she is not trying to hide the fact that she’s wearing glasses.  She’s even flaunting it, maybe a wee bit.  

Like garters, glasses are supposed to be sexy on women because men want to take them off of that woman.  But this oversimplifies the fetish.  There is something absolutely paralyzing about the object itself – be it garter or glasses – that entrances the male gaze.  That is, after all, the definition of a fetish.  “Any object…that causes a habitual erotic response or fixation.”  Pola’s glasses fit the bill here.

The simple fact is that eyeglasses are sexy.  Or at least: they can be sexy. Some women refuse to wear eyeglasses because they think it might make them less attractive. It doesn’t. Men find eyeglasses appealing for several reasons. They add a layer of mystery. They highlight intelligence. Men are stupid: they may not notice how naturally intelligent you are unless you’re wearing glasses.  Or conversely, they may think you are intelligent simply because of the fact that you are wearing glasses with no further evidence.  Glasses draw attention to a woman’s eyes. The style of eyeglasses can reveal a little something about the woman wearing them.

In a good conversation, a woman’s eyes tend to be the part of the body that men focus on, and glasses, literally, frame the eyes. A woman wearing eyeglasses may seem more insightful and focused. The design of the frames can divulge a few intimate secrets. The woman might want to convey a sense of seriousness, but if she’s wearing animal-print frames, she’s giving the world a hint that she has a wild side. If the frames have a tint of color, it boosts the effect of the irises’ natural pigment. 

The most important part of choosing glasses is making sure you are confident in the ones you choose. Confidence shows, and is extremely sexy. Choose the frames and lenses that cry out to you, whatever look you go for. Wear your sunglasses with pride and they will add a mysterious magnetism to your look.

When it comes to my movie time, chick flicks tend not to appear on my radar as they usually do not contain:

a). enough stuff blowing up
b). any sense of realism
c). anywhere close to an Oscar winning storyline or performance

You Again will be no different, I will not be watching it, it was hard enough watching the trailer believe me!  The only reason for me to show any sign of interest in this likely flop of a film (currently registering a lowly 19% on the all important Tomatometer @ Rotten Tomatoes) is to see the lovely Kristen Bell in geeky looking glasses.

Great news for those that have been struggling to watch the latest 3D movies due to having a prescription.  According to the Italian eyewear giant Luxottica, Oakley are planning to launch the first range of fashionable glasses complete with optically correct 3D prescription lenses!  Unfortunately there are no details to whether these glasses are just for cinema use or whether they will in fact work with the current crop of 3D enabled TV's, hopefully more details will be released shortly.

This range of glasses are currently in testing but Oakley are planning to release this range of 3D glasses across the US later this year, and to the rest of the world in 2011.

Roberto Cavalli was born in Florence on the 15th November, 1940. He was raised in a surrounding with strong artistic traditions: his grandfather was a Florentine painter from the “Macchiaiolo” movement, whose works can still be seen at the Uffizi Museum. Following in this tradition, Roberto attended the Academy of Art. Capricious, eclectic and original from the beginning, he began his career when he was very young, while still a student, inventing the first of his revolutionary creations: a process of printing on light-weight leather which he was able to do thanks to his meticulous research of fabrics and continual experimenting with new technologies.

In his printing-house – something half way between a craftsman’s workshop and an artist’s studio – he concentrated his studies on the links between art, fashion and painting, eventually patenting the revolutionary process of printing on leather that he had evolved.

Over the next ten years he created, almost by chance, what was to become a “must” for the beat generation: for fun, sewing together odd pieces of leather, he invented the first of his patchworks which were a huge success and can honestly be considered true classics. With the Seventies came international recognition and the beginning of a brilliant career. His fashion was unrivalled on the Cote d’Azur. From St. Tropez – where a young Brigitte Bardot walked barefoot in one of his creations – to the catwalks, was just a short step.

In 1972 Roberto Cavalli showed his first collection in the historic White Room of Palazzo Pitti, in Florence. At the beginning of the Nineties, the designer re-launched his challenge to the fashion system, assisted by his beautiful wife, Eva Duringer – an ex Miss Universe – who works alongside him. His enormous success, both publicly and with the press, convinced him to take his catwalk extravaganza to Milano Collezioni. In this way he has become part of the Italian fashion system without ever forsaking his own inimitable eccentricity.

Over the years Roberto Cavalli has expanded and, as well as his Womenswear collection, new lines have been launched: Menswear, Just Cavalli, Underwear, Class Roberto Cavalli, Eyewear, Timewear, Roberto Cavalli Angeles and Devils ( for children), and Roberto Cavalli perfume. An inspiration to the international jetset, Roberto Cavalli is taken for granted by stars all over the world. Eclectic, social and ironic by nature, as a designer he sets himself apart through his natural vivaciousness and extreme manners – as well as his renowned hospitality which makes him the perfect host for parties and dinners.

As well as his brilliant career as a designer he is equally well-known for his spectacular parties, which are always attended by Italian and international celebrities. Electronic Eyewear

Following ten years in development PixelOptics, a US lens company based in Roanoke, Virginia are on the threshold of releasing the first dynamic electronic spectacle lens commercially.

President and chief executive officer of PixelOptics Ronald Blum said, ‘Electronic eyewear has intelligence built into them’, it allows the lens to know where your looking, auto-focusing faster than the blink of an eye using chemistry, electricity and other components for the correction of presbyopia and other visual disorders and does so without moving parts.

This pioneering development in ophthalmic lenses has no dividing lines or an obvious progression of power,  despite allowing clear focus from far to near and everything in between. In addition there will be an appreciable reduction in lens distortion typically experienced with bifocal and progressive addition lenses, this is achieved thanks to the variation of the index of refraction of an electro-active layer located within the lens.

The Japanese electronics giant Panasonic have collaborated with PixelOptics to create the first commercial electronic eyewear, PixelOptics were thrilled with the opportunity to work alongside a well respected and internationally recognisable company, President and chief executive officer of PixelOptics Ronald Blum said consumer knowledge and scientific expertise has proven to be most valuable and positive.

Yukinori Okazaki the Chief Technology Officer and board member for Panasonic Shikoku Electronics Co said “We anticipate there will be a lot of opportunities in health care that will benefit the world’s aging population in which Panasonic Shikoku Electronics Co can play a significant role. We see Pixel’s electronic eyeglasses as one of these opportunities.”

It seems these electronic glasses will be introduced to the public in the second half of 2010, with distribution channels such as lens manufactures, optical laboratories, frame suppliers and general eye care professionals. The question is how much will a pair set you back… I guess we’ll have to wait and see?

While looking for any interesting eye / glasses related news today I came across an interesting article on the Daily Mail website looking at 5 individual cases of people who took a simple trip to their local optician only to be told they have potentially life threatening health problems.  Here are the 5 cases with a brief snippet of the conditions that were uncovered thanks to a visit to their optician:-

Juliet, 32, went to a laser eye clinic to see if her eyes were suitable for treatment and ended up being diagnosed with an incurable bowel disease…

Andrew, 16, who has always been very fit and a competitive swimmer was taken to see his GP because he had athlete’s foot. While he was there he mentioned he’d been getting lots of bad headaches, so was told to visit the optician. At Specsavers the following day, the optician took one look in Andrew’s eyes using a hand held light, spun round and asked: ‘Who’s his doctor?...

Ken, 74, who has always had regular eye check ups with nothing untoward ever found suffered from a case of double vision while on the golf course and driving his car.  A visit to his optician revealed that the muscles that control movement were very weak, hence the double vision.  On referral to his GP he was informed he had myasthenia gravis, an autoimmune disease that interferes with the passage of messages from the brain to the muscles in the body…

Tom, 15, who had lost weight, was getting headaches and stressed, also suffered from intermittent short sightedness where his vision would would blur on and off.  A checkup from his father who was an optometrist revealed he probably had diabetes.  A trip to his doctor confirmed this…

David, 41, who had a very stressful job took a visit to an optician was told by his optometrist that he needed to get himself to A&E as he had papilledema, a swelling of the optic disc – the end of the optic nerve. This meant the pressure in his brain was dangerously high which could have resulted in a heart attack or stroke if left untreated…

We regularly like to remind all our readers and customers to visit their optician once every couple of years as not only will your optician be able to check the general condition of your eyes to see if your vision has deteriorated, your optician will also be able to alert you to any possible health issues and refer you to a doctor.

As a bit of a geek myself who wears sunglasses most of the time, I fail to see how these will be popular.  Firstly, by today’s standards 4Gb is just not enough storage space for storing all my images, graphics and videos that I may want to carry around, and secondly I already have an inexpensive larger USB drive on my key ring along with my car keys that are practically always in my pocket (unlike my sunglasses that are often left in the car during the day, a car that can get hot enough to corrupt any data stored on a USB drive!).
