Cinema time again folks and yesterday we made full use of the Orange Wednesday promotion to see Michael Bay's new explosive blockbuster, Transformers: Dark of the Moon, and of course in glorious 3D.

I know the Transformers franchise is not for everyone but if you're a bloke who loves to be blown away by stuff blowing up, stunning visual effects, and supermodels wearing not very much/just looking pretty, and you can forget about the mediocre storyline and cheesy vocabulary, then you will very much enjoy what Michael Bay is about to serve up.  It gets a 6/10 from me although I'd have to give it a 9/10 for the special effects and action scenes!

Unfortunately, Dark of the Moon contains no Megan Fox this time (boooo!) but instead we get to salivate over her supermodel replacement, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, with no acting experience she was obviously only chosen for her stunning good looks and not her ability to act.  One particular scene where Rosie caught my eye (other than her first introductory scene that rivals Megan Fox's in the first Transformers movie… you know the one) was during her introduction to Sam Witwicky (Shia LaBeouf) in the presidents office, Rosie was sporting a very geeky pair of plastic rimmed specs very similar to those found in the Ray-Ban collection.

There are certain fashion accessories that modern culture obsesses over, and at the top of that list are glasses. Although technically these are items that are worn for corrective reasons, the same way one would wear a hearing aid, they have their own school of style. What we call "nerdy" glasses is the best example. Classic styles have been created throughout the years, which society relates to those studious, clever nerds whom everyone secretly wants to be like. While constantly reading and studying may be boring, wearing the nerdy glasses is easy, fun and nowadays a flattering accessory.

Classic Black-Rimmed Wayfarers

The wayfarer design for glasses has become a quintessential part of American accessorizing. Not only are they the foundation for some of the most popular sunglasses ever, but with prescription lenses, they create the ultimate uni-sex nerd glasses. When most people think of nerd glasses, whether it be those worn by Buddy Holly or the heroes in "Revenge of the Nerds," they usual think of these black-rimmed frames. Although they may have started off as glasses for legitimate nerds back in the 1950's, they are now the spectacles of choice for any self-respecting filmmaker or indie rock musician, whether it be Woody Allen or Rivers Cuomo. To up the ante, and get the most nerdy-ness out of the black-rimmed wayfarers, it's customary to add a small piece of masking tape around the frames, right between the eyes.

Gazelle Glasses

Gazelle glasses have been in and out of fashion since the early 1980's. These types of frames were originally designed for the elderly, which is why the lenses are so large, but it's their square shape that gives them their distinct, somewhat comical appearance and makes them so popular among the younger crowd. The trend really took over when Run DMC wore them as part of their group uniform, and nowadays, anyone from young, indie actors to professional football players can be seen sporting a pair of these over-sized glasses. Although many a girl has pulled these types of frames off, the nerdy gazelle glasses are typically worn by men.

Cat's Eye Glasses

Although there's no doubt that some men have tried, the cat's eye glasses are a nerd accessory that is, for the most part, for girls only. It's also a timeless classic that dates back to the 1940's. The name describes the shape of these spectacles. As opposed to a rounded, even shape, the frames curve into a pointed edge on the outer tips of the lenses, giving them a feline feel. Well they may not have been considered "nerdy" when originally conceived, their now-vintage aesthetic has made them popular among pop-culture nerds everywhere, especially those who love all things 1950's. The more hip versions of these nerdy frames are typically bedazzled with rhinestones around the edges and come in an array of colors aside from the original black.

Robert Downey Jr. – Tony Stark / Iron Man

The brilliant Robert Downey Jr (recently seen in Sherlock Holmes) stars as the billionaire inventor and founder of Stark Industries, Tony Stark, who unlike most superheroes, makes no secret about his own Super Hero alter ego – Iron Man.  Like most billionaires, Tony Stark likes fast cars, fast women, and nice things including flashy sunglasses (don’t we all?).

Mickey Rourke – Ivan Vanko / Whiplash

Mickey Rourke recently had a return to form with an Oscar nomination for his performance in the tragic and moving 2008 film The Wrestler.  Rourke stars in Iron Man 2 as Stark’s arch enemy Ivan Vanko / Whiplash and can be seen in the trailer wearing spectacles and safety goggles as he produces God only knows what kind of Iron Man killing tools of destruction.

Sam Rockwell – Justin Hammer

We also spotted Sam Rockwell (the star of probably our favorite film of 2009 “Moon“) wearing some black thick-rimmed glasses.  Sam stars as Arms Dealer Justin Hammer – a likely rival to Tony Stark’s dominance in the Arms industry.

Iron Man 2 is set to be released in May 2010 and will no doubt be the first in a long line of summer blockbusters!

Anyone who has read this blog before knows that we like to make the odd trip to the movies and shame on us if we are also big fans of Megan Fox too (as mentioned in our Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen post), after all, which red-blooded male isn’t?

Personally I was also a massive fan of the movie Juno, written by Oscar winner Diablo Cody and starring Ellen Paige, so I was looking forward to see what she (Cody) would come up with next.

To find out that the aptly named Megan Fox would be the star of Cody’s next film script made me very happy, and yet a little bit sad at the same time, since Megan Fox is not famous for appearing in Oscar nominated movies, but seeing as she is Megan Fox I will let her off on this occasion.  But even that didn’t end my concerns, as Jennifer’s Body is a movie in a completely different genre to the adorably uplifting Juno.

I still wanted to see Jennifer’s Body regardless (don’t we all), although I did lower my expectations when I found out it was going to be a teen horror.  Its not that I don’t like horror’s, I love them, Alien and John Carpenter’s The Thing are probably my favourites of all time and there are some real classics from the 70’s and 80’s and Japanese Horror is generally brilliant too, but it’s the whole ‘Teen’ sub-genre horror that I have a problem with normally.

Despite my regularity of cinema visits over the years I don’t think I have ever been inspired to see a Teen Horror Movie (or maybe even a Teen Movie at all) in the cinema.  So when I eventually saw Jennifer’s Body (just the movie sadly) I was in for a bit of a movie-going experience surprise.  It was quite a different experience to what I am used to and haven’t really experienced since I saw The Matrix in a large crowded American multiplex ten years ago while on Holiday in Florida!

The cinema was ram-packed full of teenagers, most of whom were probably younger than the 15 certificate of the movie, which worried me a bit as I haven’t really enjoyed the company of that many modern-day teenagers in recent history; in fact I didn’t even enjoy being round them when I was one myself, but that says more about me than them.  I’m sure they’re all perfectly fine in reality and its just the press that gives them all a bad name the poor little blighters.

As a child of the 80’s myself I have seen my fair share of horror movies (most of which I was underage at the time), so I’ve become quite desensitised to them, but I enjoy a movie that tries to scare me, although its much more difficult nowadays and quite honestly the environment has to be right.  A dark, quiet room, late at night all on my own seems to work best.  So a crowded cinema probably wasn’t going to do it for me on this occasion, but in spite of that I had a good time.

It was hilarious for me to witness a cinema full of screaming kids scared out of their wits!  They were literally screaming and jumping out of their skin like they’ve never been scared before.  I got the impression that most of the audience had never seen a horror movie before, and its not even as if its that scary really.  The film has a number of clichéd jumpy moments, but anyone who’s seen a movie at all before knows how these things work surely?  Except perhaps the audience I was sitting with.  Not that it detracted from my enjoyment of the movie, in fact it probably made it even more enjoyable to see all their terrified little faces, bless them.

But I couldn’t help but think the film would have been better still if it was an 18 certificate.  Then we could have had even more and better on-screen deaths which were a bit lacking for a film of this type thanks to the child-friendly rating.

On the whole though, and just speaking for myself, it was a fun movie going experience.  I particularly enjoyed Diablo Cody’s witty dialogue and writing style, which is pretty unique right now but I’m sure that many screenwriters will soon be mimicking.

Amanda Seyfried’s Geeky Glasses Fascination

“What does all this have to do with a blog about glasses?” I hear you ask.  Well okay, maybe you didn’t even know this was a blog about glasses at all and just stumbled here through your never-ending search for Megan Fox goodness.  But since that’s what we do here we couldn’t pass up on the opportunity to talk a bit about the real star of the movie Amanda Seyfried and her love of geeky glasses, not just in the film but in real life too!

Amanda Seyfried who plays nerdy schoolgirl ‘Needy’ in the movie Jennifer’s Body wears the stereotypical geeky glasses that all nerds in movies have to, but that doesn’t stop Needy from having a boyfriend like it would in most films (until she takes the glasses off of course – ‘She’s All That’ anyone?).   Needy even manages to keep her glasses on (albeit on the top of her head) during a passionate and steamy make-out/kissing session with Megan Fox’s character Jennifer.

In the movie, Amanda Seyfried’s glasses remind me a little of the kinds of styles that Johnny Depp likes to wear in everyday life, but Amanda has been seen enjoying a spot of Grand Slam Tennis at the US Open in September with her boyfriend Dominic Cooper in some pretty large and equally geeky looking glasses.  Not to mention the dustbin-lid sized frames she’s worn in photo-shoots like the image below.

The fact that she can wear such large glasses and still look stunning is testament to how beautiful she really is; Amanda Seyfried really can wear geeky glasses and pull it off.  And it’s thanks to people like Amanda, Nelly Furtado, Zachary Quinto and Johnny Depp that the ‘Geek Look’ is becoming so popular right now and we love it too.

Amanda also seems to like the large style glasses when she out in the sunshine too, here she’s seen out and about and on the set of Jennifer’s Body wearing the ever popular Wayfarer style sunglasses.

Set in 1933, it was a time before glasses and sunglasses were truly fashionable in the way they are today, or available in hundreds of different styles from various designers.  Refreshingly, there are no Wayfarer or Aviator style frames to be seen!  Instead, many of the characters from Public Enemies are wearing simple round metal or plastic rimmed (or rimless) vintage frames.

Johnny Depp stars as outlaw John Dillinger in Public Enemies and is seen wearing several vintage style frames during outdoor scenes throughout the film, the first is a simple acetate tortoise shell frame while the other sunglasses are a thin wire-frame in silver/gold with red-tinted lenses, similar in shape to a style worn in a previous Johnny Depp film, The Ninth Gate.

At one point he is also seen wearing some interesting looking prescription glasses which are quite angular (almost hexagonal in shape), but sadly the cinema we saw the film in wouldn’t allow us to take cameras in to take pictures.  Can’t think why!

We often see Johnny Depp wearing a pair of retro themed tortoise sunglasses called Lemtosh by Moscot Originals during his public appearances including to the premier of his new movie Public Enemies at Leicester Square, London.  The Lemtosh frames are based on the original designs that made Moscot Eyewear famous back in the 1930s and 1940s.

Anyone who has read our blog before, knows we are quite the movie fans; and last night we had a date with FHM’s Sexiest Woman in the World 2008, the appropriately named Megan Fox (and a bunch or robots), or Michael Bay’s new explosion fest that is Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.

Speaking for myself, as a big fan of the toys/comics/cartoons as a child growing up, just like the first movie, I absolutely loved Revenge of the Fallen.  Anyone who has seen a Micheal Bay film before (Bad Boys 2, Armageddon, The Rock) will know that Michael Bay “demands things to be awesome!” If its not blowing up, its not worth filming.

So in short, the SelectSpecs film review might go something like this.  If you don’t like things blowing up and you don’t demand things to be awesome, or if you don’t like any of Michael Bay’s other films, then you probably wont like Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.  Its about as simple as that.  There was enough stuff in the movie to make me feel like a big kid again, but I must say that as an adult, the scenes where Megan Fox is running in slow motion might actually be greatest moment in the history of cinema.

Anyway, all this is a great excuse to write more about the lovely Megan Fox and her sunglasses trends.

These Ray Ban 3025′s have remained the most recognised model across the globe due to their celebrity cult following and we’re sure Megan Fox with all her beauty and her current popularity with the World’s media will generate a new surge of interest.

As usual, we kept our eyes peeled just in case any Glasses or Sunglasses were worn by any of the leading actors, unfortunately, even in some of the bright sunny environments, none of the leading actors seemed concerned about protecting their eyes (or indeed adding to the films already long product placement list)!

Shia LaBeouf, who stars as Sam Witwicky in the Transformer movies, also appeared in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull as Indiana’s son in 2007 and Disturbia in 2006, has been nominated for an Empire Award for Best New Comer, an MTV Movie Award for Best Male Performance, four Teen Choice Awards – one of which he won – and a National Movie Award for Best Performance by a Male.  LaBeouf has also been named as 2007′s “star of tomorrow” by the ShoWest convention of the National Association of Theater Owners.

Even though LaBeouf did not wear any glasses in Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, he has however been pictured wearing sunglasses during down time and in another recent film, Eagle Eye.
