Snapchat is about to mix up the technological world, its goodbye to traditional glasses and hello to Snap Specs.

That’s right, Snapchat is about to turn Google Glass on its head with their latest social media experiment. You can find out more here.

What are Snap Specs?

With a launch date imminent Snap’s Spectacles are going to sweep the social messaging boards like never before. The messaging app company have broadened their techie horizons and embarked into the gadget arena.

Featuring sunglasses that include a built in camera, Snap Specs might be the go to gizmo for those bright young things. So what is so spectacular about these groovy new glasses?

It will have the ability to record at least 30 seconds of real time video. On top of this move, Snapchat have reinvented themselves. Known as Snap Inc, it seems the firm is highly ambitious to throw themselves into something more than an app.

How Popular is Snapchat?

There is no denying the impact Snapchat has made on youngsters around the world. With more than a whopping 150 million users to its name, it recently overtook Twitter for activity.

We are not done just yet. Here are some more snappy stats. The messaging app has more than an incredible 6 billion video views daily

What are it’s features?

In more recent months, Snapchat has introduced a number of different functions for users to enjoy. In the first instance, communication has been made into a game like experience with short clips and annotated selfies.

This is largely in part thanks to its specific software which allows users to exchange faces in an image. On top of this, it enable users to produce a whole bunch of other stuff such as vomiting rainbows.

You can even make a photo of yourself look like a puppy! Encouragement is another way in which users engage and interact. Dubbed “Snapstreak,” this tots up how many days users have been chatting to their closest compadres.

And we should not forget the influence of celebrities through Snapchatting. Many have turned to this platform in a bid to communicate with fans. This includes the likes of Kim Kardashian whose user name is @KimKardashian, former 1D star Zayn Malik (@ZAYN) and dear old Miley Cyrus (@mileycyrus.)

Founded by Evan Spiegel, Snapchat has caused a worldwide frenzy, so much so the US President’s daughter has taken to it recently.

Current President Barack Obama has recently declared that Sasha his youngest daughter took to the messaging app to make fun of him. This was as a result of a family dinner where Barak was recorded expressing his views on this social network.

The Specs

According to the rejuvenated Snap, the sunnies will have an exclusive release initially. Spiegel has been lapping it up though on a shoot taken by Karl Lagerfeld. He revealed in an interview the thinking behind Snap Specs;

“It was our first vacation, and we went to Big Sur (a state park based in California) for a day or two. We were walking through the woods, stepping over logs, looking up at the beautiful trees. When I got the footage back and watched it, I could see my own memory, through my own eyes – it was unbelievable. It’s one thing to see images of an experience you had, but it’s another thing to have an experience of the experience. It was the closest I’d ever come to feeling like I was there again.”

Snap has already released details although minimal with regards to the functionality of the glasses. Footage is recorded via a circular template which is at present a unique concept.

Whilst the circular recordings can be seen in any direction what about the battery life? This is said to last approximately one day. The glasses will work in the same way as a video camera with a light indicating when it is being used.

Will Snap Specs be Successful?

It may well be a case of broken dreams if Snap Specs does not take off, especially with the epic fail of Google Glass.

This new wave of smart glasses really didn’t cut the gadget mustard and was a million miles off being a genuine consumer must have. Furthermore, there was also the little know issue of price which came in at a hefty $1,500. Ouch!

In the end, Google stopped development and Google Glass was parked along with its hardware problems. Some saw it as an invasion of privacy, whilst others saw these glasses as simply ludicrous.

In today’s fast paced society, appearance is everything when it comes to youth. Many believed Google’s product would make them stand out in an unappealing way.

Yet, Snap Specs actually stand a slighter better chance in this market. Celeb driven influence means that they may improve on their predecessor.

A cool pair of sunnies of the cool generation, you could easily see Miley Cyrus out in a pair. Design is very much a fashion statement and a pair of sunnies is without doubt one fashion accessory that ranks high among millennials apparel.

The way in which the camera is concealed and doesn’t stand out makes the overall appearance better. But you will need to record in daylight hours to see its full effect.

This content led generation is constantly looking for different ways in order to tell their story. Snapchat Specs could be that solution.

“We’re going to take a slow approach to rolling them out. It’s about us figuring out if it fits into people’s lives and seeing how they like it.” Spiegel told the Wall Street Journal.

Available in three colours including teal, coral and black, they have been officially dubbed as Spectacles. The device is set to launch in the last quarter of 2016 for £100.
