As a child growing up in the 80's, I used to absolutely love the 80's action TV series "The A-Team" alongside other favourites including Street Hawk and Airwolf, there was something great about how rediculously unrealistic the show was especially when B.A. Baracus drives a clapped out old van into a shed only to re-appear looking like an armoured tank with missile launchers and guns attached – seriously, where did they get the equipment to build such a beast?

Since growing up a little, I've caught a few glimpses of The A-Team series and it's just not the same anymore, for a start it looks dated and the story lines are just plain rediculous, so when I heard they were finally going to make a movie based on the almost 30 year old series I was both delighted and shocked by the prospect – Initial thoughts were it was likely to be just as rediculous as the series, so watching the movie and seeing a helicopter do a barrel roll just confirmed my worst fears!  Fortunately, even with moments of rediculousness, the film was an easy to watch and entertaining popcorn flick worthy of 90 minutes of my time.

The movie remake stars Liam Neeson (Taken) as Colonel Hannibal Smith, Bradley Cooper (The Hangover) as Lt. "Faceman" Peck, Quinton Jackson as B.A. Baracus, and Sharlto Copley (District 9) as Captain H.M. Murdoch. The film follows the exciting and daring exploits of a colorful team of former Special Forces soldiers who were set up for a crime they did not commit. Going “rogue,” they utilize their unique talents to try and clear their names and find the true culprit.

The other night we finally got to see the new British movie Moon by Duncan Jones and staring the excellent Sam Rockwell.  I absolutely love this kind of intelligent sci-fi genre and have been waiting since the 40th anniversary of the Moon landings back in July to see this little movie, but its limited run has forced me to wait patiently for the film to arrive in the South East of England where we are based.

Sam Rockwell plays lone isolated astronaut Sam Bell, coming to the end of his three-year contract on a moon base supervising an automated mining operation.  When he goes out on a routine mission to one of the mining machines he is involved in an accident, crashing his lunar vehicle and injuring himself trapped inside.

He wakes up back in the base with no memory of the incident but is told by the computer (voiced by Kevin Spacey) he had an accident.  After a few days to recover he eventually gets out of the base and discovers his crashed lunar vehicle.  He recovers an injured survivor bringing him back to the base only to discover the survivor is apparently himself.

It’s refreshing to see an old-school style science fiction tale of such intelligence and quality, despite the sometimes Earth-like gravity.  The film really gets across the magnificent desolation and isolation of being on your own for 3 years so far away from Earth.  It’s also an interesting look at how humanity might actually run an operation like this, even a little worrying.  Why can’t there be more of these kinds of films?

My verdict: Loved every minute of it.  A very good 8/10

Well, the 123rd Wimbledon Tennis Championships is over for another year and what a way to end it with an epic battle between Andy Roddick and Roger Federer with Federer finally beating the big serving American 5-7 7-6 (8-6) 7-6 (7-5) 3-6 16-14 in a grueling four hours and 16 minutes to claim his sixth Wimbledon crown and to also record his 15th Grand Slam title overhauling the total set by Pete Sampras who was in the Royal Box along with fellow legends Bjorn Borg and Rod Laver.

Unfortunately, it was not the final many of us Brits had hoped for with many fans and supporters hoping to see a big final showdown between Andy Murray and Roger Federer.  Andy Murray who progressed well could only make it as far as the Semi-Finals where he was beaten in 4 sets by Andy Roddick.

With the weather being absolutely superb for the 2009 championships, the usual umbrella and raincoat attire were replaced by suncream, hat’s and sunglasses to offer protection against the blazing British summer sun, and of course, the superb weather gave us the perfect oppurtunity to check out what sunglasses some of the WAGs (Wives and Girlfriends) were wearing while supporting their men.

Kim Sears

Andy Murray’s girlfriend and daughter of Nigel Sears who coached Daniela Hantuchova at WTA level, has been by Andy’s side throughout the tournament.  Kim has been wearing Ray-ban Aviator 3025s during Wimbledon but also wore Ray-ban Wayfarer‘s during the Queens tournament before this years Wimbledon Championships.

Brooklyn Decker

Andy Roddick’s Wife Brooklyn Decker, best known for her appearances in Sports Illustrated modeling swimsuits, has also been wearing the Ray-ban Aviator 3025s during the tournament.  This frame style is just so popular right now with many fans also adopting this great style.

Judy Murray

Not quite a WAG but we couldn’t finish this blog entry without giving a mention to Andy Murray’s mother, Judy Murray.  We’re not quite sure of the Sunglasses Judy wears but for similar styles why not try the 2015 Predator from Ray-ban or a similarly styled low cost option, the Bouganvilla by Savannah with a tint.

It has now been almost 2 weeks since the king of pop, Michael Jackson, passed away at his Los Angeles home reportedly from a cardiac arrest, and as a tribute to his life and career spanning  over 40 years with over 750 million albums sold and countless awards including 13 grammy’s, we at SelectSpecs.com have decided to celebrate his life by looking back at some of the sunglasses (and glasses) he wore throughout his career.

Jackson has regularly been seen wearing the popular Ray-Ban Aviator style frame throughout his career, including the Ray-Ban 3025.

His most recent appearance wearing the Ray-ban 3025 Aviator sunglasses was at the news conference announcement for his upcoming tour “This is it” at London’s O2 Arena.

Jackson also went through a period of wearing the iconic Ray-ban Wayfarer, a style that every celebrity seems to love at the moment.

RIP Michael Jackson – 1958 – 2009

Wow, it’s that time of year again and the good ole British summer is finally upon us, and in typical British fashion, it’s raining!  Thankfully British summertime is gifted by a deluge of summer music festivals and other summer events around the country that are sure to keep everyone happy whether the sun is shining or the rain is falling.

Festival events such as Glastonbury or V-Festival offer a great opportunity to dress to impress with a funky outfit finished off with a great pair of stylish sunglasses (or perhaps a stylish pair of wellies).  Obviously being in the eyewear industry we are particularly interested in what sunglasses to wear to a major summer event that will not only help you to look uber cool but will also do a fine job of protecting your eyes from damaging UV rays from the the harsh summer sunshine (and even if it’s cloudy).

Everyone’s fashion tastes are different but the most obvious style to wear for your typical music festival event is the the classic festival eye wear of choice, the Retro style.  Big on statement and bold on colour!

Retro, and other Funky styles

The classic festival choice has to be, as always, the wayfarer style frame, it’s been worn by rock gods and other celebrity icons for the past 50 years!  Essentially the style has stayed the same since it’s original incarnation in the 50′s, however, the style is no longer limited to just boring black or tortoise shell, it’s now available in a vast number of bright vibrant colour styles including reds, blues and yellows, perfect for the extroverted festival goer and fashion fanatic! Not only are bright vivid colours the order of the day for festival goers, sunglasses with a slightly different shape to the norm could also be considered worthy festival wear, take these heart shape glasses for example.

Made famous by Kanye West his Summer 2007 music video, Stronger, these Shutter or Grill styled shades are still popular today and are bound to be sported by many at a festival near you this year!  These shades may look cool but as they don’t have lenses they offer no protection whatsoever against UV damage.
