Buying glasses can be overwhelming if you go it alone, trying to pick out frames in a busy optician's store can be like trying to buy a wedding gown at a wedding fair. Our glasses are pretty important. This is your face we are talking about, and you are probably going to wear your glasses every day. People say that your frames are your most important accessory, but they’re really even more important than that.

So how do you know which frames to buy? This certainly isn’t a “one style fits all” scenario. The truth is that most people want to wear frames that offset their natural features in order to create a balanced look. I say “most people” because some people can get away with wearing any frames and still look beautiful. And some people want to accentuate their distinct features to call attention to them. And all of that’s okay. But for the purposes of this article, I’m going to talk to the rest of us, those of us who just want to look presentable, professional, and maybe even pretty.

Round Face

Hiro Nakamura from the TV show Heroes (played by Masi Oka) has a recognisable round face and distinctive square shaped, wire framed, semi-rimless glasses.

Most people have round (or at least roundish) faces; these people should aim to wear frames that feature right angles, i.e. rectangular frames, probably complete full-rimmed rather than partial semi-rimless frames. Rectangular frames are popular right now because there are a lot of round-faced people out there, and they’ve figured out what looks good. If you are self-conscious about your roundness, consider getting a frame with thick lines. When it comes to frames, chunky is in.

Square Face

Demi Moore comfortably wears round, thick-rimmed, Wayfarer style frames with her square face.

The inverse is also true. If you have a square face, you can soften your features with rounded or oval glasses. Nature gave you enough right angles, so you want to complement them with curves.

Some people shy away from the completely rounded frames for fear of looking like a middle-aged Harry Potter. Those folks should do well with oval frames.

Heart Shaped Face

Some people have what is called a “heart-shaped face,” which really just means that their faces are broader at the top and narrower at the bottom. Their faces are really shaped more like guitar picks than hearts, but hearts sounds more romantic. A heart-shaped face does best with a style that draws attention to the eyes. Sometimes this ends up being a sort of retro look.

Jennifer Love-Hewitt has a heart shaped face and manages to wear geeky looking thick-rimmed frames which really draws your attention up to her eyes.

There’s nothing that says you can’t sport a little bling in the upper corners of your glasses. If you are really artistic, you can add your own. Less daring folks do well with semi-rimless glasses.

Oval Face

If you were blessed with an oval face, you can get away with wearing just about anything. Tina Fey (above) is almost as recognizable for her glasses as she is for her hit comedy movies and TV shows.

In general, just remember that if you have a wide face, you want narrower glasses. If you have a narrow face, then you want wider glasses (though not so wide that they dwarf your whole head).

Be picky and be persistent. There is a pair of glasses out there that will make you look dazzling. Sometimes the perfect glasses take a while to find, but once you do, you will look even more you.

You Again will be no different, I will not be watching it, it was hard enough watching the trailer believe me! The only reason for me to show any sign of interest in this likely flop of a film (currently registering a lowly 19% on the all important Tomatometer @ Rotten Tomatoes) is to see the lovely Kristen Bell in geeky looking glasses.

If you are remotely interested in this drivel, here is the movie synopsis from Apple.com

"Successful PR pro Marni (Kristen Bell) heads home for her older brother's (Jimmy Wolk) wedding and discovers that he's marrying her high school arch nemesis (Odette Yustman), who's conveniently forgotten their problematic past. Then the bride's jet-setting aunt (Sigourney Weaver) bursts in and Marni's not-so-jet-setting mom (Jamie Lee Curtis) comes face to face with her own high school rival. The claws come out and old wounds are opened in this crazy comedy that proves that not all rivalries are forever."

Checking into Facebook occasionally while writing this blog post about Justin Timberlake and The Social Network movie I notice 'friends' arguing that "Macs are actually better than PC's…" (they are completely wrong by the way, and I've already commented with my 2 cents…), another friend recently 'Checked in to McDonalds', and more friends adding a ton of holiday pictures just to make you feel a tad bit jealous.

Also, 'John Roberts is now friends with Sally Lewis and 10 others', well it seems John is clearly doing better than me in the Facebook popularity stakes…

Bad times - no new friends. =(

Facebook, for those not in the know, is a social networking website founded by Mark Zuckerberg back in 2004 with recent reports suggesting the website has managed to accumulate over 500 million users earning Zuckerberg a net worth of over $6bn. If what you hear in the news is correct, the development of Facebook has been filled with high drama, betrayal and rage – certainly enough juicy content for a great book or a movie perhaps…

Well Facebook fans, you'll be pleased to hear that the "The Social Network" biopic drama directed by David Fincher and staring Jesse Eisenberg, Justin Timberlake and Rashida Jones will be released in the USA on the 1st October with the UK release following on the 15th October.

Below is a brief synopsis of the movie from IMDB.com

"On a fall night in 2003, Harvard undergrad and computer programming genius Mark Zuckerberg sits down at his computer and heatedly begins working on a new idea. In a fury of blogging and programming, what begins in his dorm room soon becomes a global social network and a revolution in communication. A mere six years and 500 million friends later, Mark Zuckerberg is the youngest billionaire in history… but for this entrepreneur, success leads to both personal and legal complications."

While we've only seen the trailer at this point we've only been able to identify Justin Timberlake as one of the main characters to wear glasses in The Social Network.

Justin Timberlake – Glasses from 'The Social Network'

Justin Timberlake plays Sean Parker who informally advised the creators of Facebook before becoming president of the company in 2004. Justin Timberlake wears a simple round style full rim frame which is similar to the style worn by Sean Parker.

Justin Timberlake – Glasses from the Movie Premiere

As suggested in our previous blog post about Justin Timberlake, Justin needs to wear glasses due to being short sighted so he rocked up to The Social Network premiere sporting a pair of geeky thick-framed glasses looking every inch the brainbox character he plays in the film.

Born in Austin, Texas and raised in Santa Fe, New Mexico, Tom Ford is among the most highly respected and successful designers today. The winner of numerous design awards, his rise in fashion began in 1994 when he became Creative Director of Gucci. Not only did he dramatically change the image of the legendary fashion house, he led the company to unprecedented success with his visionary insight into what the modern consumer desires. His innovative and provocative designs set the tone for an entirely new direction in the world of luxury goods.

In 2000 Ford also took creative control of Yves Saint Laurent, a Gucci Group brand, reviving it with his trademark combination of sensuality and mystique. In April 2005, one year after leaving Gucci Group, he announced the creation of the TOM FORD Brand. A beauty and eyewear collection launched in 2005 and 2006.

In April 2007 his first directly operated retail store will open in New York at 845 Madison Avenue to coincide with the debut of the signature Tom Ford Menswear and accessory collection. Ford currently lives in London, Santa Fe and Los Angeles where he has a film production company called Fade To Black.

Roberto Cavalli

We have 50 Roberto Cavalli Glasses and 55 Roberto Cavalli Sunglasses models available.

Roberto Cavalli was born in Florence on the 15th November, 1940. He was raised in a surrounding with strong artistic traditions: his grandfather was a Florentine painter from the “Macchiaiolo” movement, whose works can still be seen at the Uffizi Museum. Following in this tradition, Roberto attended the Academy of Art. Capricious, eclectic and original from the beginning, he began his career when he was very young, while still a student, inventing the first of his revolutionary creations: a process of printing on light-weight leather which he was able to do thanks to his meticulous research of fabrics and continual experimenting with new technologies.

In his printing-house – something half way between a craftsman’s workshop and an artist’s studio – he concentrated his studies on the links between art, fashion and painting, eventually patenting the revolutionary process of printing on leather that he had evolved.

Over the next ten years he created, almost by chance, what was to become a “must” for the beat generation: for fun, sewing together odd pieces of leather, he invented the first of his patchworks which were a huge success and can honestly be considered true classics. With the Seventies came international recognition and the beginning of a brilliant career. His fashion was unrivalled on the Cote d’Azur. From St. Tropez – where a young Brigitte Bardot walked barefoot in one of his creations – to the catwalks, was just a short step.

In 1972 Roberto Cavalli showed his first collection in the historic White Room of Palazzo Pitti, in Florence. At the beginning of the Nineties, the designer re-launched his challenge to the fashion system, assisted by his beautiful wife, Eva Duringer – an ex Miss Universe – who works alongside him. His enormous success, both publicly and with the press, convinced him to take his catwalk extravaganza to Milano Collezioni. In this way he has become part of the Italian fashion system without ever forsaking his own inimitable eccentricity.

Over the years Roberto Cavalli has expanded and, as well as his Womenswear collection, new lines have been launched: Menswear, Just Cavalli, Underwear, Class Roberto Cavalli, Eyewear, Timewear, Roberto Cavalli Angeles and Devils ( for children), and Roberto Cavalli perfume. An inspiration to the international jetset, Roberto Cavalli is taken for granted by stars all over the world. Eclectic, social and ironic by nature, as a designer he sets himself apart through his natural vivaciousness and extreme manners – as well as his renowned hospitality which makes him the perfect host for parties and dinners.

As well as his brilliant career as a designer he is equally well-known for his spectacular parties, which are always attended by Italian and international celebrities. Jennifer Lopez, Britney Spears, Alicia Keys, Paolina Rubio, Cindy Crawford, Lenny Kravitz, Bon Jovi, Bono from U2, Anthony Hopkins and Sting are among the artists who appreciate his work and never miss one of his parties. An undisputed phenomenon, nowadays Roberto Cavalli is a mainstay in the Olympus of the most famous international designers. A success for which he prepared, meditated and wholeheartedly deserves.

Mont Blanc

Here on the SelectSpecs blog we write a lot of posts about celebrity glasses but so far we’ve neglected their cartoon cousins. There have been so many awesome cartoon characters that wear specs over the years – here is our selection of some of the best ones that we’ll always remember with fond nostalgia…

1. Hans Moleman (The Simpsons)

Without doubt one of the funniest Simpsons characters, Hans Moleman’s awesome powers of feeble ineptitude undoubtedly stem from his super thick (and frankly pretty useless) goggle-eye glasses. The poor guy always seems to be hit with the most terrible misfortune, he is always back on his walking stick and ready for the next disater. Moleman, we salute you!

2. Peter Griffin (Family Guy)

Did you just double take? Most people (me included!) don’t even realise that Peter from Family Guy even WEARS glasses. But yup, there they are, glued to his face and cunningly exactly the same size as his oversized eyeballs (hence the confusion). Bet they came in handy when the giant chicken was trying to peck his eyes out (see video). For the record we at SelectSpecs don’t recommend using your glasses as a suitable defence against giant chickens. In fact we suggest you stay away from psychotic poultry altogether.

3. Penfold (DangerMouse)

The show may have been named after DangerMouse but we all know Ernest Penfold, the cute, bumbling, giant-headed sidekick to the World’s Greatest Secret Agent was the real star of the show. Yes, he had a squeaky voice. Yes, he was rather dim, terrified of everything and utterly useless at crime fighting. Yes, he usually ended up getting captured by the enemy so DangerMouse had to rescue him. But he was just so CUTE! His top phrases are “crumbs Dangermouse” and “Ooh-eck!”

Penfold and his iconic glasses have a far reaching legacy for glasses wearers across the UK, becoming the standard school playground taunt towards the kid with glasses. School bullys, you thought you were being mean but actually it was a huge compliment. Penfold Rocks. Really.

4. Velma (Scooby Doo)

Aaah Velma, the archetypal Geeky Glasses Girl, aka “the clever one from Scooby Doo”. Velma is usually the one coming up with the elaborate plans despite being the youngest in the gang. Without her glasses she cannot even see her own hands in front of her face. When Scooby Doo was made Velma may have fit the stereotype of the harmless, nerdy smart girl with confidence issues and bad grooming, but we reckon there’s more to her and today she’d be more like Enid from Ghost World. There’s even a dedicated Velma Dinkley fan site “In appreciation of the most under-appreciated member of Mysteries Inc (a groundbreaking piece of web design by the way).

5. Spongebob Squarepants

Spongebob uses his glasses like most people use reading glasses, except he only uses them when he goes jelly fishing. Most of the time they don’t seem to help at all and he rarely manages to catch anything.

A lot of people seem to associate Spongebob with the the conveyor belt of brain-dumbening cartoons that have kids glued to their TV sets with blank faces and open, drooling mouths. They’re wrong. If you watch Spongebob, its actually a brilliant introduction to surreal, offbeat humour – kind of like Ren & Stimpy meets The Three Stooges. I’d rather my kids watch that than High School Musical, that’s for sure…

6. Eric Cartman (South Park)

OK so Cartman doesn’t exactly wear glasses but he gets in the list for the classic “Respect My Authoritah” Ray Ban Sunglasses look, and because he has to be one of the funniest cartoon characters ever created. Nuff said.

7. Professor Frink (The Simpsons)

Yes, the second Simpsons entry in our list but I just could not leave off the genius that is Professor John I.Q Nerdelbaum Frink Jr. – the uber geeky scientist modelled on the classic Nutty Professor played by Jerry Lewis. We particularly love his tendency to get into a gibberish fit when he gets excited. Frink is never to be seen without his glasses on, which is all part of his nerdish charm we reckon.

8. Professor Farnsworth (Futurama)

The Simpsons creators basically took Professor Frink, added a few hundred years, senility, liver spots and a sadistic evil streak to create the lovable Professor Hubert J. Farnsworth. Apparently the aged professor (Fry’s great great great x30 nephew) has never been seen without his coke-bottle glasses on the show, although in one episode he did need his “reading glasses” which were twice the size of his normal ones! (bonus points to anyone who can name the episode).

9. Cedric Sneer (The Raccoons)

Watching the trailer for The Raccoons makes me go a bit warm and fuzzy inside with nostalgia. The adventures of Bert Raccoon and his friends against the evil industrialist aardvark Cyril Sneer were a crucial part of any 80s childhood. Cedric Sneer was Bert’s best friend and also the son of his arch nemesis Cyril Sneer. Quite frankly Cedric was a bit of a tool – pretty weak and useless and he ends up joining forces with his dad. But he did have some seriously heavyweight dork glasses and some insane nasal plumbing.

10. Bonus Entry: Mr Magoo

OK so the whole point of Mr Magoo was that he doesn’t wear glasses – but the blind old codger is such a legend we had to have him in here. So what – it’s our blog, we can do what we want =)

Honorable Mentions

Here are a bunch of other glasses wearing cartoon characters that didn’t make it into our arbitrary list…

More from the Simpsons (we could do a whole post of these): Millhouse, Grandpa Simpson and occasionally Homer (his ‘intellectual’ glasses):

Mr Mackey (“Drugs are bad, mmmmkay?“) and Mr Garrison from South Park:

Hank Hill (King of the Hill) – everyone’s favourite salesman of propane and propane accessories:

Daria Morgendorfer (Daria) – the deadpan, emo/goth with the monotone wit:

Chuckie (Rugrats) – the kid who made it acceptable for two year olds to wear (and lose) glasses:

Johnny Bravo – the vain, dim but ultimately cool Elvis-impersonating sunglasses-wearing animated hero. Bonus points for almost getting it on with Velma Dinkley after helping her find her glasses!

Dexter (Dexter’s Laboratory) – the boy genius with a secret laboratory no doubt derived his powers of awesome from his oversized glasses:

With all this lovely sunshine lately there has been fresh concern in the press recently about parents neglecting to protect their children’s eyesight from harmful UV Rays. As many as three out of four parents are guilty of such disregard towards their children’s own health.

A poll of 2,000 people for the College of Optometrists revealed some interesting, if somewhat scary results: -

Nearly a third of parents in Britain do not buy their children sunglasses at all

Half of those that do buy sunglasses for their children put price before protection

Only a quarter buy sunglasses of a trusted brand

Exposure to UV rays from sunlight can cause irreparable damage to the retina and lens of the eye and can lead to long-term damage and conditions like cataracts and age-related macular degeneration later in life.

The more UV exposure a person has during their life, the higher their risk will be. Research suggests that up to 80% of a person’s exposure to harmful UV light happens before the age of 18, yet over three-quarters of parents don’t make sure their children wear sunglasses. People in sunnier climates such as Australia, the Mediterranean or high up in the mountains should take extra care to protect their eyes.

It is recommend throughout the Optics industry that people follow some of these guidelines when it comes to protecting yours and your children’s eyesight: -

Choose dark glasses with a CE mark for quality

Make sure any sunglasses (or prescription glasses) you purchase have full 100% UV Protection – FREE with www.SelectSpecs.com Yes, even transparent prescription lenses can offer full UV Protection

Sunglasses don’t have to be expensive, as long as they offer the protection of the CE mark and 100% UV Protection

If you can’t get your children to wear sunglasses the next best option is to get them wearing a sunhat with a wide peak to help shade their eyes

Make sure the sunglasses fit your child well. If your child is able to look over the top of the lenses, they may as well not be wearing any

If your child is particularly active you can purchase bands that go round the back of their head to stop the sunglasses falling down

If you have light coloured eyes i.e. blue eyes, you are most at risk and should always wear sunglasses. If you wear prescription glasses, we recommend upgrading to Photochromic Lenses that darken automatically in sunlight

Don’t buy knock-off sunglasses, particularly from market stalls, auction websites, or dodgy characters in pubs or service station car parks and be especially wary of buying sunglasses in Asian countries. Cheap sunglasses often provide ZERO UV Protection, which is actually worse than wearing no sunglasses at all because the pupils will dilate behind the dark lenses allowing more harmful UV Rays into the eye.

The Royal College of Ophthalmologists recommends children wear protective sunglasses if they are likely to be exposed to a lot of UV light, such as during a day at the beach, while very young children or babies should not be exposed to bright sunshine at all.

At SelectSpecs one of our most popular Small Fit Sunglasses have been the reasonably priced Bolle Spry Sunglasses – ideal for children or people with very small faces.

It has now been almost 2 weeks since the king of pop, Michael Jackson, passed away at his Los Angeles home reportedly from a cardiac arrest, and as a tribute to his life and career spanning over 40 years with over 750 million albums sold and countless awards including 13 grammy’s, we at SelectSpecs.com have decided to celebrate his life by looking back at some of the sunglasses (and glasses) he wore throughout his career.

Jackson has regularly been seen wearing the popular Ray-Ban Aviator style frame throughout his career, including the Ray-Ban 3025.

His most recent appearance wearing the Ray-ban 3025 Aviator sunglasses was at the news conference announcement for his upcoming tour “This is it” at London’s O2 Arena.

Jackson has also worn an alternative to the 3025′s, the slightly bolder Ray-ban 3030 Outdoorsman.

Jackson also went through a period of wearing the iconic Ray-ban Wayfarer, a style that every celebrity seems to love at the moment.

Michael Jackson’ Glasses

Jackson has also been photographed wearing normal prescription style glasses rather than sunglasses. Unfortunately we are unable to identify the frames he is wearing here.

RIP Michael Jackson – 1958 – 2009

Justin Timberlake, also famous for dating Britney Spears and Cameron Diaz, seen here with girlfriend Jessica Biel is wearing plastic framed spectacles with a slight curve to the frame. Unfortunately we are unsure of what designer these glasses are by, however, we have found a selection of similar looking frames you may like to try.

The past couple of months has been a very busy time for us not only because of the increasing number of orders but also from the increase in incoming mail from generous members of the public sending in their glasses to us to donate to Vision Aid Overseas. So we wanted to take this opportunity to write a blog post to say Thank you for your generous donations! A large box of donated glasses was dispatched to Vision Aid Overseas just a few weeks ago and we are already building up another box load!

Vision Aid Overseas doesn’t just rely on old donated glasses, but also through fund raising as well. Nick Lawson from lens supplier Essilor has recently completed a 3 and a half week 6300 mile journey to Timbuktu by car with his journey taking him through France, Spain, Morocco, Western Sahara, Mauritania and Mali. Nick and his travel buddies managed to raise over £1500 through donations as well as the auction of their car at the end of the journey for Vision Aid Overseas and Cancer Research.

If you would like to support Nick’s efforts you can donate money to one of the charities by visiting:

http://www.justgiving.com/clearlyneedmedication/ (for Cancer Research)
http://www.justgiving.com/clearlyneedmedication3/ (for Vision Aid)

Who are Vision Aid Overseas?

Vision Aid Overseas is a UK charity dedicated to helping people in the developing world whose lives are blighted by poor eyesight. 300 million people in the developing world need glasses to live an ordinary life, but do not have them due to poverty and the lack of optical services. The consequences for individuals and their communities can be devastating.

The work of Vision Aid Overseas helps children to receive an education, mothers and fathers to keep working and gives people the vision to fight poverty.

If you have any old glasses tucked away in your draws that you no longer require, why not donate them to Vision Aid Overseas? All you need to do is pop your old glasses in a jiffy bag (something protective!) and send them to us at the below address.

Want to get involved in how SelectSpecs.com develop their website? Well here’s your chance to put your comments forward on our new Prescription and Lens Options system, read on…

We have been having a bit of a debate here over the past few months about how we can develop our Prescription and Lens Options system to make the process of buying prescription glasses easier for our customers. General consensus is that we want to move away from the single page format we currently use to a more user friendly (and informative) step-by-step design. Here are our thoughts on the 2 different formats:

Current:- Everything on one page

This is the current format we use for allowing customers to choose lens options and then enter prescription details. Although the page in general is clear if you know what you are looking for or have previous experience in buying prescription glasses, we feel the process could be easier and clearer for those new to prescription glasses or are perhaps less experienced with using computers. If you have not seen our current prescription and lens options system, take a look at our Reglaze Glasses page for an example of the single page format.

Positives
+ Lens options and prescription form is on one page
+ Prices displayed immediately and reflect different lens option choices
+ Quick and easy for experienced customers

Negatives
- Not as clear
- May prove daunting to those new to glasses / inexperienced computer users due to amount of information displayed on a single page
- Help & Information is in ‘pop ups’ rather than always displayed on page
- No clear breakdown of the product being ordered

Proposed:- Step by Step

This is the proposed new format for allowing customers to choose lens options and enter prescription details. This process we think would make the whole process of buying prescription glasses online a much simpler process that’s less daunting to all our customers. While we realise the current format of displaying lens options on one page is good for showing our great prices ‘at a glance’, we want to ensure that our new step-by-step system will continue to build on this feature so our great prices are never hard to find!

Positives
+ Clear and Concise
+ Simple to understand and follow – Help on the page rather than in pop ups
+ Each individual category of options (such as lens thickness or coatings) will have its own page
+ Clear breakdown of the product being ordered including pricing

Negatives
- Process may be more time consuming for experienced customers

An example of the Step-by-Step process may look a little like this:-

So if you have any comments regarding this development we would really love to from you as it will help us to improve our Prescription and Lens Option pages effectively to meet our customers needs. Please leave any comments below and we’ll put your views forward as part of the development process.

Every day we receive deliveries of various designer glasses and sunglasses with their respective protective cases from our suppliers to fulfill all our orders. This means we get to see some of the work that has gone into creating the different frame styles and protective cases created by the designers. In the past few weeks I’ve been looking at the different styles of cases available from various designers and have to say that some designers really put as much thought into the cases as they do their glasses! Here are a few of our favorites…

Dolce & Gabbana

More form over function with the Dolce & Gabbana Sunglasses case, certainly not a practical design but does relay their luxurious brand rather well. The Dolce & Gabbana case makes some effort to mimic or at least resemble a ladies handbag, albeit in miniature. Although having said that, there is nothing miniature about this case as far as cases for glasses go. This case is not exactly pocket sized, but it does say something for the quality of the brand. The magnetic latch snaps shut in a satisfying manor and the diamonds that make up the logo will certainly prove to be the centre-point of conversation amongst your lady friends.

Opening the case reveals a cavernous space to store your nice new prescription glasses or sunglasses with room left over for cleaning cloths and plenty of fresh air too.

Gentlemen shouldn’t worry about the feminine nature of this Dolce & Gabbana case since men’s frames are usually provided in cases that are somewhat more practicle in nature.

Lacoste

This case from Lacoste screams Wimbledon Tennis and Strawberries & Cream! This hard, square shapped quality-built case is sure to protect your eyewear when not in use and proves quite practical for everyday use.

Ferrari

There’s nothing too fancy about this Ferrari Sunglasses case, however, they have taken their trademark ‘red’ colour and applied it to their cases. A closer look at the texture and stitching on this case reminds me of the honeycombe effect seen in carbon-fibre – the ultra-tuff, ultra-light meterial used to manufacture racecars today. All it needs are some white ‘go faster’ Challenge Stradale stripes to finish the design off nicely…

Speedo

A unique and somewhat clever design that clearly takes some design elements from their swimwear products. See how this case actually resembles a woman’s swimsuit. This sporty, plasic heavyduty case features a rubbery finish sure to protect your frames from the odd bump or two. I haven’t tested the theory but I would not mind betting that this case would not only be waterproof but would also float if you somehow decided to go swimming and forgot to take it out of your swimming shorts pocket.

Timberland

This case has a somewhat rugged feel to it and the colouring makes me think of wide open country/mountainous spaces associated with the Timberland brand. The case also has a suede like texture which some may find weird to touch (in a ‘scraping nails down a black board’ type way).

Persol

Persol seem to like using leather in many of their cases, lovely.

Alexander McQueen & Just Cavalli

These designers like to use seriously durable hard cases, and they’re shiny!

While many of these cases are designed to keep your glasses and sunglasses protected and scratch free, its true that some cases provided by some of the top designers are probably not that practical to carry around everyday or throw into the glovebox of your car. Some would go as far as to say they are merely packaging to ‘add value’ to the product. Nevertheless there are certainly some cool designs available.

If you need something light to just slip your glasses into when leaving them in the car or some other safe place, why not try our Micro-Fibre Case/Cleaning Cloth. It may not prevent your glasses from being crushed should you run them over with the car (yes, this really happened), but atleast it will prevent your lenses from getting scratched against your keys in your bag.

Found any interesting case designs lately? why not tell us about them.

A quarter of the UK population could be endangering their vision because of the financial downturn according to Action for Blind People (ABP). The charity is calling for people to get their eyes tested in the New Year and not to be put off by the economic downturn after a study revealed that many are avoiding eye tests because of the cost. The YouGov survey found that of 2,350 people questioned about their attitudes towards eye tests, 27 per cent hadn’t had their eyes tested in the last two years, with 30 per cent citing cost as the reason.

The findings are supported by another YouGov survey commissioned by medical insurer Engage Mutual, which suggests that over quarter of the UK population (26 per cent) are struggling to meet the cost of new spectacles.

Source: OpticianOnline.net (2009)

We find news stories like this worrying as we actively encourage our customers to have an eye test every two years (or sooner) to ensure their eyes are healthy. We realise the cost of having an eye test can be expensive but there are often free eye test options available from various opticians at different times of the year to help reduce costs – and as we love to save our customers money, we will post any free offers on our blog as and when we discover them!

Many customers may also be put off by the thought of having to buy a new pair of expensive glasses from their optician right after having an eye test, however, under the UK Opticians Act of 1989, it is the obligation of any optician to provide you with a prescription so you can be free to shop elsewhere for your glasses and at an often greatly reduced cost.

So if you are lucky enough to have taken advantage of a free eye test and have your new prescription to hand we know you can pick up a great pair of stylish cheap glasses for less than £50 including FREE Thin and Light Lenses, UV, Anti-reflection and Scratch Resistant coatings. Here’s a great example from our Arbor range of glasses…

If you are on an even tighter budget, you can have a new pair of lenses fitted to your much loved existing frame for as little as £15 by using our popular Reglaze service. We believe our Reglaze service is a great alternative to buying a completely new pair of glasses! More information can be found here.

While watching the Gadget Show on channel Five (15th December 2008) the presenters, Dallas Campbell and Jason Bradbury, had a look at future technologies and what we could expect to see in the shops in the future, one of the technologies that caught my eye was Ion-Mask, a technology that could potentially render many of our every day items completely impermeable to water. The Ion-Mask technology works by using a chemical based on the element fluorine which when placed in a closed chamber, vaporises and attaches itself, molecule by molecule, to the material. Watching the Gadget Show article and others on You Tube shows that Ion-Mask could be applied to virtually any object!

I see this as a potentially interesting technology for eye wear of all kinds, from prescription glasses, sunglasses, swimming goggles, safety goggles, and even visors for crash helmets! Could this allow glasses to be worn outside in the rain or in environments where they are prone to misting without ever fogging up/requiring a wipe? Could swimming goggles and diving masks remain mist free whilst underwater giving swimmers and divers crystal clear vision? And how about crash helmet visors, this technology would give every day motorcyclists to Formula 1 drivers a totally clear view of the road during light or heavy rain showers at day or night, any rain droplets coming into contact with the visor would simply bead off. This certainly could be an interesting new technology for the eye wear industry!

For more information about this exciting new technology and what applications it could be used for, please take a look at the videos.
