On the 23rd November 2011 we carried out a Street Survey to find out if wearing glasses changes the way people see you.  With photos of five different people (both with and without their glasses) we asked passers by to rate a selection of the images based on the following traits: -

• Attractiveness
• Intelligence
• Trustworthiness
• Employability
• Sex Appeal

Even we were amazed by the results.

100% of the models were considered by the public to be sexier, more employable, trustworthy AND intelligent when wearing their specs.  But even more interestingly, our study found that it was men who benefited most from embracing their specs.

Women considered the male models on average 38% more attractive and 35% more intelligent when wearing glasses.  One male model was perceived as a whopping 75% sexier when seen in specs.  Men in general were considered to be 60% MORE SEXY by women.  With figures like that it seems like a no-brainer – If you want to turn heads, you've got to make a 'spectacle' of yourself.

Survey Results

On average our models were said to be:

• 14% more attractive with glasses
• 22% more intelligent with glasses
• 17% more trustworthy with glasses
• 23% more employable with glasses
• 27% more sexy with glasses

Women were asked to rate two male models both with, and without, their glasses.  Women said the two male models appeared, on average:

• 38% more attractive
• 35% more intelligent
• 60% sexier

…while wearing glasses.
 

Women said that one of our male models was:

• 48% more attractive
• 49% more intelligent
• 75% sexier

…while wearing glasses.

Well Facebook fans, you'll be pleased to hear that the "The Social Network" biopic drama directed by David Fincher and staring Jesse Eisenberg, Justin Timberlake and Rashida Jones will be released in the USA on the 1st October with the UK release following on the 15th October.

Great news for those that have been struggling to watch the latest 3D movies due to having a prescription.  According to the Italian eyewear giant Luxottica, Oakley are planning to launch the first range of fashionable glasses complete with optically correct 3D prescription lenses!  Unfortunately there are no details to whether these glasses are just for cinema use or whether they will in fact work with the current crop of 3D enabled TV's, hopefully more details will be released shortly.

This range of glasses are currently in testing but Oakley are planning to release this range of 3D glasses across the US later this year, and to the rest of the world in 2011.

This video released on the 23rd March 2009 (just a few days since writing this), has already generated a lot of interest amongst the YouTube.com community, the video has already racked up almost 200,000 views and 600 ratings and well over 300 comments – comments ranging from “Awesome video”, and “Would make a great Ray-Ban commercial” to the oh so common “FAKE!”. The amateurish looking Super Chameleon ad features no direct Ray-Ban branding, the only giveaway is that the creators of this video have cleverly used their iconic Wayfarer sunglasses to advertise both their brand and the large collection of colourful RB2140 Wayfarer Sunglasses.

Some of you may be wondering why Ray-Ban would make an advert yet fail to put their name to it, a mistake perhaps?  Not exactly, these internet only adverts are what is known in the industry as ‘Viral Marketing’, this technique uses pre-existing social networks to produce an increase in brand awareness through a self-replicating viral process – in other words viewers will watch the videos, leave comments, and share with other internet users (through emailing links to friends or posting links to the videos on blogs or social networking websites) because it’s a great or funny video without realising it’s actually an advertisement.  This type of marketing can be very successful if done correctly and the fact that Never Hide Films has managed to generate such an interest demonstrates the power of viral campaigns.

This video is just one of the many internet only adverts created for the Ray-Ban marketing campaign, “Never Hide” which comprises of an innovative mix of media: from cinema to print, posters, outdoor, Internet, and “consumer generated viral content” in order to promote their brand and collection of Designer Sunglasses.

We have been having a bit of a debate here over the past few months about how we can develop our Prescription and Lens Options system to make the process of buying prescription glasses easier for our customers.  General consensus is that we want to move away from the single page format we currently use to a more user friendly (and informative) step-by-step design.  Here are our thoughts on the 2 different formats:

This is the current format we use for allowing customers to choose lens options and then enter prescription details.  Although the page in general is clear if you know what you are looking for or have previous experience in buying prescription glasses, we feel the process could be easier and clearer for those new to prescription glasses or are perhaps less experienced with using computers.  If you have not seen our current prescription and lens options system, take a look at our Reglaze Glasses page for an example of the single page format.

This is the proposed new format for allowing customers to choose lens options and enter prescription details.  This process we think would make the whole process of buying prescription glasses online a much simpler process that’s less daunting to all our customers.  While we realise the current format of displaying lens options on one page is good for showing our great prices ‘at a glance’, we want to ensure that our new step-by-step system will continue to build on this feature so our great prices are never hard to find!

+ Simple to understand and follow – Help on the page rather than in pop ups
+ Each individual category of options (such as lens thickness or coatings) will have its own page
+ Clear breakdown of the product being ordered including pricing

- Process may be more time consuming for experienced customers
