Ian John-Lewis

It’s not every day you get a world class boxing referee come into your store but when Ian John-Lewis was invited to come into SelectSpecs and undergo the most advanced eye exam available – an OCT, he happily obliged.

The OCT (Optical Coherence Tomography) test not only detects a number of key eye conditions but also scans in 3D enabling the optometrist to look beneath the surface of the regular retinal image and cross-reference any possible areas of concern from the scan.

Ian’s status as a boxing referee is well known in the sport but the Chatham based resident also had a fledging professional career in boxing.  Shockingly, Ian admitted that he has never had his eyes tested before! This is despite the fact that as a boxer you are always likely to receive blows to the head, so this OCT test was always going to attract interest.

The Results

The overview picture above, shows all the scanned images taken during the OCT exam including the thickness map in 3D, the Fundus image and the cross section of layers that make up the back of the eye.

Fundus Image

Above is the Fundus image which shows the interior surface of the eye including the retina, optic disc, macula and posterior pole. In this image there are no areas of concern.

Thickness Map (3D)

Ian John Lewis

This is the thickness map in 3D. On this image it is possible for the optometrist to see any areas of concern or interest.

Cross-Section

Ian John Lewis

This unusual image is a cross-section of the layers that make up the back of the eye. Here we can see a small section on the bottom layer of the retina that is just starting to become detached, this is called a pigment epithelial detachment (PED). This is obviously something that we would like to keep a close eye on and make sure that it doesn’t become a problem for Ian. But for now he should be fine and  there is no reason for Ian to experience any problems.

However, it would be interesting to know whether or not, if this damage to the layer of the retina was related to boxing injuries or whether it is just a natural situation that Ian would have experienced regardless.   Unfortunately, we are unable to make any true scientific claim in this respect because we do not have an adequate audience of Boxers to analyse the results of their OCT tests (at this time).  Any boxers out there who would like to help in this respect should let us know ;).

Our SelectSpecs Optometrist Said:

“The results were hugely successful with the only slight concern being a small section of Ian’s bottom layer of the retina starting to detach but otherwise  Ian’s eyes are in good health with the recommendation of visiting once a year for an exam just to check up on the condition”.

Ian came away from SelecSpecs Opticians with the analysis of the OCT test and a pair of SelectSpecs glasses which Ian will need to use when he is reading.  Amazingly, this is Ian’s first pair of glasses and he left the store very happy.  Ian was also extremely pleased with his results.

This is Ian in his glasses…we think he looks great!!
