{"id":189,"date":"2009-03-06T16:36:40","date_gmt":"2009-03-06T15:36:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.selectspecs.com\/gandhis-glasses-sell-in-18m-auction\/"},"modified":"2009-03-06T16:36:40","modified_gmt":"2009-03-06T15:36:40","slug":"gandhis-glasses-sell-in-18m-auction","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.selectspecs.com\/blog\/gandhis-glasses-sell-in-18m-auction\/","title":{"rendered":"Gandhi&#8217;s Glasses Sell in $1.8 Million Auction"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Gandhi\" src=\"https:\/\/www.selectspecs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/03\/gandhi.jpg\" \/> <strong>It was an auction that nearly didn&#8217;t take place as the Californian seller James Otis announced he had had enough of the controversy being generated by the sale of a number of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi&#8217;s personal effects. <\/strong> The Indian government had expressed anger over the sale of the national treasures which included <strong>Gandhi&#8217;s trademark, round metal spectacles<\/strong> (pictured below), leather sandals, a pocket watch, and a metal bowl and plate from which the Indian independence leader ate his final meal before he was assassinated in 1948. <img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Gandhi\u2019s Spectacles\" src=\"https:\/\/www.selectspecs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/03\/gandhi-glasses.jpg\" \/> Some of India&#8217;s richest men, and their representatives were present at the New York auction, hoping to rescue the national treasures, which eventually sold for <strong>$1.8 million<\/strong> to billionaire businessman Vijay Mallya &#8211; India&#8217;s seventh-richest man, who plans to return the items to his homeland.\u00a0 His agent said &#8220;He was bidding for the country&#8221;.
