Are you off on a camping holiday with your family and friends this summer? Perhaps you are going to a festival which will require to spend the night in a tent?
Whether you are an experienced camper or a nervous novice, there are a few camping essentials which you need to ensure you are taking with you.
Make sure you plan ahead and bring all of these items with you – or your fun outdoor holiday might turn into a bit of a disaster!
Ok, this is an obvious one, but make sure you are bringing a tent which will be more than big enough to accommodate your camping party, all your food and all of your belongings.
There is nothing worse than being stuck in a tent unable to move with someone else’s feet in your face.
I would recommend sizing up in your tent – for example, if just two of you are camping, opt for a tent which says it would fit three or four people.
If there are lots of you, you may want to consider getting a tent with separate ‘rooms’ for the best experience.

You need to make sure you a properly comfortable and warm at night.
Ideally, you should bring with you:
- A sleeping bag (double or single)
- A blow-up mattress
- A camping mat (for the floor)
- An extra blanket
- A hot water bottle just in case it is really cold
Don’t simply buy the cheapest sleeping equipment on the market either – it is definitely worth investing in these items so that you don’t ruin your night in the outdoors!
Ideally, give your blow-up mattress a trial run before hand.
I’ve had a nightmare experience before when my mattress deflated half way through the night and it was the most uncomfortable sleep I have ever had.
3. Cooking Utensils
Don’t go hungry on your holiday.
You don’t want to just have to rely on cold meals to see you through the trip either.
Make sure you have the facilities to make a delicious hot meal every day.
Take with you:
- A gas stove and fuel
- Plates and cutlery (disposable is fine)
- Utensils for cooking
- A cool box for perishables
- Kettle for the stove
- Cups and mugs
Plan ahead a make a meal plan for several easy meals which you can make, and make sure you have all the equipment you need for them.
Also, don’t forget a can and bottle opener for drinks and canned foods!
4. Weather Appropriate Clothing
Before you go, check the weather forecast and plan your wardrobe accordingly.
Make sure that if it is raining, you take a waterproof coat, Wellington boots and maybe even waterproof trousers!
Take plenty of options just incase one set of clothing gets completely drenched.
If it is hot, make sure you are not going to roast overnight in your tent.
Take lots of light clothing which will allow your skin to breathe – fitness clothing is great for this.
Also never forget sun cream – you don’t want a dose of sunburn ruining your break.
A pair of sunglasses wouldn’t go amiss either for when you are chilling outside your tent.

5. Boredom Busters
This is a good idea especially if children are going with you who are likely to get bored.
It is time to switch off technology and focus on games and puzzles which will get everyone off their phones and interacting with each other.
Think playing cards, board games, puzzles and some active games such as swing ball or badminton.
Make sure you have enough boredom busters to keep everyone entertained for hours.
