Coat Styling 101

It’s still a little chilly out there and, during these rapidly changing seasons, it’s hard to know what to wear. How can you keep up impeccable style whilst catering for the weather?

To get your spring style on point, here are our top suggestions for matching jackets with various looks.

Fur Coats

Firstly, let’s have a look at the fur coat.

A style perfect for glam nights-out when you want to dress up to the nines. Whatever colour you choose, these coats always love to see a splash of sparkle; jewellery is a must.

Rings, necklaces and earrings are perfect if you stick to a consistent metal – gold with a pastel pink fur coat would look beautiful. As for the rest of the outfit, I’d suggest a jumpsuit and boots. If it’s warm enough, a shift dress and kitten heels.

Any pattern will do: stripes, florals, and even shimmering sequins would all look great here (perhaps not all at the same time, though!).

One of my favourite styles of coat is the duffel. You can dress it up or wear it casually. It’s versatile, and that’s what I love about it.

I often wear my grey duffel with a scarf, dark jeans and ankle boots, just for an everyday look.

Grey gives you options to add other colours to your outfit. Being monochrome, it would welcome a pop of yellow, red, or pink as shown below.

The smart style of this coat means that it wouldn’t look out-of-place with a dress or skirt. I’d stick to A-line or shift dresses; they won’t give the coat too much volume, instead keeping to a smooth, chic look.

Raincoats

There’s no avoiding those dreaded downpours – we all know they could spring on us at any time!

Give some love to the good old raincoat. A necessity here in the UK, these coats don’t always jump to mind when planning a great outfit. But there are some cute styles out there – such as this one, for example.

Layering

Rolled sleeves & a button-up front, different from your average fold-up rain mac.

For iffy weather, you’re going to want to stay warm. Layering up is key here – a collared blouse under a thin jumper will keep you toasty without feeling restrained.

A style made for casual days when you’re out and about. You can’t go wrong with a pair of denim jeans, boots, or wellingtons if needs be.

Again, if the weather’s taken a turn for the worse, you’re going to need to wrap up.

Parker coats with fur-lined hoods are my go-to style for cold days. Here, a brightly-coloured coat is paired with dark clothing, making it the statement piece of the outfit.

Wet-look leggings are great for going out whilst keeping you warm. Add a silver necklace and glittery clutch bag to really bring out the glam.

Leather

Last but in no way least is the leather jacket.

Never seeming to go out of date and can bring together an outfit effortlessly.

Beautifully paired with black jeans, heeled boots and a striped top. Topshop have paired theirs with a denim mini-skirt, tights and black boots, giving an urban edge to the outfit.

To freshen up the look, the leather jacket would also go great with a floral blouse and white jeans.

For accessories, I’d go for simplistic gold jewellery and a pair of sunnies. Oval or round frames will definitely add to that street-style look; the gold detailing on the ones below will harmonise with the other accessories.
