How To Succeed In The Office

Many years ago, my star sign said, make yourself your top priority. Since then the phrase has been implanted in the frontal lobe of my brain and I go by it everyday religiously.

I even have it written on my fridge door.

Taking care of myself, watching every step I take, always trying, staying safe, cooking myself an amazing meal, exercising, listening to music, going on holidays, buying new clothes, even though I don’t need to, investing in myself and learning something new every day, have contributed to a better me.

Sometimes life will beat you to the ground, you will think that your job is not challenging or mentally stimulating or it is very tough and unfair.

I have been through this and still go through it all the time, which taught me one thing: perseverance.

If you’re going through hell, keep going. – Winston Churchill

Every time life gives me hard time, whether it’s a manager, a colleague, a till person, a racist poodle or windscreen wipers slamming my fingers, I stop and say, ‘so life, think you are tougher?’ and I give life and whoever I am looking at a smirk.

These two tips below, if followed daily, will simply make you invincible to life’s harsh times, and will make you the person you want to be.

1. Avoid Toxic People

You will find them everywhere: the workplace, the street, the super market, the morning train ride, etc.

Everywhere you go, you have to be aware that you will come across such people.

What can you do?

To have a better life, stay away from them as much as you can.

Do not hate or think about them at all.

Do not even allow yourself to spend any of your precious time worrying about what they do, did and will do to you.

I am not sure why such people exist but they are like mosquitoes; they only exist to bite you and make your life and skin itch.

You will only waste time if you worry about why they exist.

Instead, train your mind to see the good in everything.

Everyone has come across these sorts of people to deal with everyday, whether its at work, the gym, school, university, or anywhere really.

It takes courage and confidence to face such people and teach them a lesson to remember.

What to do when you can’t get away from them, especially in the office?

If your manager is the sort of person who likes to boss his employees around or your colleagues are nags due to jealousy from your hard work, just be professional, go by the book, do your job, and chat with colleagues who have the same mental level as yours, then go home.

At my previous job, I experienced such predicament when I received an award for a project and my colleagues started treating me differently.

What did I do?

I used the time and came up with another project and won another award.

It takes practice, patience and perseverance to learn the skill of dealing with such people.

Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you. Do to others as you would have them do to you. If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you. -Jesus Christ

2. Don’t Just Play The Game: Win It

Office politics is something I am extremely weak at since I never worked in an office before, but as they say you have to play the game to progress, this is only half the job.

Make your boss and colleagues shine through genuine help and support.

Don’t claim credit every time you come up with an idea or perform well.

Collaborate your efforts with those of the ones around you and present your final project as collective effort not individual one.

Have you ever watched House of cards? Me neither.

Your job performance doesn’t play a big part in your progress, your attitude does.

You have to know and make relationships with the people who can help you and have the power to do so.

Don’t play the game, win the game.

I know it sometimes involves favoritism.

But unfortunately, to make your way up, not only where you work but in life, you have to win the game.

Like poker, it’s how you carry yourself and deceive the player in front of you using your facial expressions and eye contact, that play a big part in winning.

It’s not how many aces you have, it’s how you can make the guy in front of you sweat their brains out thinking you have the best cards. – dayenjoyer
