Janelle Monáe’s Sense Of Style

American singer/songwriter Janelle Monáe is a creative force to be reckoned with. Actress, model and political activist too; Monáe first made an impression with her unofficial studio album The Audition all the way back in 2003.

While fewer than 500 physical copies exist, Monáe would go on to sell 21,000 copies of follow up album ArchAndroid in its first week alone, signaling the markings of a bona fide superstar.

Monáe has since gone on to release a second critically acclaimed album, before turning her attention to the film industry.

She starred in the much accoladed Hidden Figures and Moonlight, for which she received widespread praise.

During her rise to fame, Monáe also carved a unique, tuxedo-wearing style for herself, in which she would almost unfalteringly wear a crisp, starched white shirt, tuxedo and perfectly coiffed hair in any public appearance.

It’s a bold look that the singer has moved away from slightly in recent times, but one that nonetheless has become synonymous with Monáe’s career.

Join us as we look at the singer’s recent fashion highlights, and how you can steal her style.

We couldn’t be any more in love with this gorgeous monochrome look from Janelle.

Mixing block panels with bold stripes, the strappy vest is paired back perfectly with the high waisted trousers, featuring a statement block black leg.

Her matching clutch and off-the-shoulder blazer completes the carefully curated, runway-ready look.

We love Janelle’s round reflective shades here, too – the perfect contrast to the  harsh angles of her separates.

Janelle works high summer and high fashion in the above shot.

Drawing inspiration from the rainforest, the singer adorns a beautiful oversized tiger print kimono, with contrasting green swirl detailing reminiscent of lush tropical palm leaves.

Her low hanging earrings accentuate the drama, while her woven hat further extends the rainforest motif.

We’re in love.

This year’s MET Gala encouraged the unexpected and celebrated all things avant garde – a theme that Janelle Monáe took to new highs with her dramatic monochrome look.

With a custom made Ralph & Russo dress and jewellery supplied by Tiffany & co., Monáe shone on the red carpet with her tribute to fashion powerhouse Comme Des Garcons.

Keeping things fitted on top with a gorgeous black and white floral bodice, its the oversized statement ruffle skirt that really steals the show here.

As if walking in a cloud, the overspill of material moves beautifully and cuts a gorgeous shape for Monae – a standout moment from this year’s ball.

Monáe works the monochrome look once again in the above shot, taken on the streets of New York.

Her faux fur polka dot coat sits back perfectly with her black and white checkered skirt.

We love the skirt’s black netting underneath, creating a gorgeous full shape for Monáe.

Her swept up hairstyle continues the monochrome look too, with perfectly placed pearls dotted about.

Monáe’s cat-eye glasses completes the classic, sophisticated look, and we couldn’t be more in love.

"She wore a raspberry beret"

Channelling the late, great Prince, whom Monáe frequently quotes as a source of inspiration, the singer rocks her own raspberry beret.

The kind we’d love to find in a secondhand store.

With lavender nails to offset the raspberry colour, it’s a gorgeous shot of Monáe, and a fitting tribute to the iconic singer.

We adore her oversized circular shades, too.
