When it comes to displays of dazzling dapper style, few nights come close to the annual Met Gala. Held in New York City to benefit the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute, the fundraiser encourages spectacular outfitting from the biggest and brightest stars, with attendees expected to tailor their looks to fit the tone of the year’s exhibition.
The theme this year, ‘Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons: Art of the In-Between’ didn’t disappoint, with celebs from John Legend to Eddie Redmayne walking the red carpet in their finest fashion.
Join us for a rundown of our favourite looks the chaps had to offer!
Nick & Joe Jonas
When the theme of the night calls for Avant-Garde, almost anything goes, and we love the two different takes on the tone by the imitable Jonas brothers.
Nick Jonas’ Ralph Lauren suit screams Art-Deco, evoking 1920s Gatsby-esque glamour, while Joe Jonas wears high-sheen H&M pinstripe for a touch of moody elegance.
Donald Glover (aka Childish Gambino) pictured above with Ruby Rose, wowed the crowds with his exquisite jacquard floral Burberry tuxedo.
Bang on trend with a dark tropical print, the talented actor and rapper put his best foot forward in high shine shoes – a great way to update a traditional look. Keeping his bow tie a simple black allows his statement jacket to take center stage, and is a great example of super slick styling.
Topping numerous best dressed lists, actor Rami Malek made waves in his bold Dior Homme suit.
Red on red might seem a strange choice on paper, but in practice Rami’s look comes together by striking a balance between statement and subtle.
It’s the accessories here that make everything work – a black embroidered rose is opted for over a black tie (which might have cheapened the look). Black high shine boots are once again chosen as a way to modernize.
Eddie Redmayne’s crisp navy Prada suit is a lesson on how to keep a more traditional look still bang on trend. The silk lapels on his beautifully tailored tuxedo pair with his bow tie to create a timeless look.
We love the double-breasted fastening on his blazer, too – another example of traditional tailoring brought right up to date by cutting the suit close to the body for a flattering slim figure.
The Weeknd and Selena Gomez made it #redcarpetofficial during their appearance at the Met Gala.
We love the simple black tuxedo worn here by The Weeknd, keeping it crisp with a matching bow tie. His delicate white corsage is a beautiful nod to Selena’s stunning Coach dress, and a great way to add subtle matching detailing when stepping out as a couple.
Another example of Burberry dazzling on the red carpet, John Legend’s white tuxedo ensured he stood out from the crowd.
Pictured above with wife Chrissy Teigen, the pair stole the show with their no-holds-barred statement styling. A slightly wider fit trouser proves you don’t always have to keep it slim to win – a more relaxed fit can still cut a killer shape.
Rapper Future proved that a pair of killer shades always have a place, regardless of the event. Wearing H&M, the traditional tailcoat is given a contemporary twist with navy blue detailing, extended throughout the entire suit.
Notice the subtly ruffled sleeves, oversized silk bow tie and single gold earring – all examples of a keen eye for the finer details that many often forget.
Try the Ray-Ban RB4256 – Gatsby I to steal his style and build up your red carpet-ready accessories.
