Primarily famous in the United States, summer road trips are becoming increasingly popular elsewhere in the world. What better way to explore your country and other countries by just packing up your car, filling up your tank and driving out into the big wide world?
Road trips are not only fun, they are affordable, easy and can be whatever you want them to be.
Summer is the best time of year for a road trip, with the long days, beautiful weather and the numerous events going on around the world.
But before you head off, make sure you bring these top road trip essentials with you.
1. A Map
Whatever you do, take a road map with you.
Even if you’re planning on taking your phone or a sat-nav, you need to prepare for the times when you will have no signal or battery.
Or what if your sat-nav gets stolen and you’re stranded in the middle of nowhere?
A good old-fashioned paper map is the way to go, plus it will allow you to see interesting landmarks and towns which you could visit.
2. Hot & Cold Flasks
You will be really thankful if you bring several large flasks to keep your water cool and your coffee hot.
You don’t want to have to keep stopping to boil up the kettle on the stove every time you want a hot beverage, so a flask is a must.
And also on this note, bring plenty of water.
Buy the biggest bottles of water than you can find – you will use it for everything.
Cooking, washing, drinking – you can never have too much water.
Try and do some research before you leave about where you can top up on water too, to save any disasters.
3. Some Comfortable Shoes

On a road trip, you are likely to be doing a lot of walking around the places and landmarks that you visit.
Can you imagine how rubbish it would be if you got some blisters on the first day of the trip, and you had to spend the rest of the holiday hobbling around?
Take some everyday trainers or shoes which you know will put up with the miles, and also bring some prettier shoes for evenings out or fancier events.
Also take some blister plasters just in case.
4. Loads of Food & Cooking Equipment
One of the best things about road trips is being able to pull up wherever you want, pull out the picnic rug and nom down on loads of delicious food in beautiful surroundings.
Make sure you don’t underestimate how much food you will eat – you would be surprised how much you will snack being in the car for several hours a day.
Take these essentials:
- A cooler box for perishables
- A gas stove or portable BBQ
- Picnic rug or table and chairs
- Plastic crockery and cutlery
- Plastic tumblers
- Loads of food and drinks
It’s best to be over prepared than under prepared when it comes to food, so just load up your car with as much stuff as possible.
5. Sunglasses For Driving & Sightseeing
Another essential, sunglasses are incredibly important in the summer.
As you will be spending so much time driving – sometimes in difficult, bright conditions – make sure a one or two pairs are in your luggage.
Sunglasses reduce squinting and eye strain which lead to headaches, and really bright conditions can lead to temporary blindness.
Polarized sunglasses especially reduce glare from wet surfaces, plus make driving in hazy conditions easier too.
We love Blogger Lara’s sunglasses in this photo.
The Ray-Ban RB3025 Aviator steal her style perfectly, with their classic aviator styling, black frames and black tinted lenses.
The double bridge detailing also adds an extra quirk and individuality to the look.
