Most people know Bobby Brown as an R&B star and as the former Mr. Whitney Houston, but the musical talent also appeared in a few films such as Ghostbusters 2, Nora’s Hair Salon and A Thin Line between Love & Hate. These days he is rarely seen without glasses, unlike his rise to fame during the late 80’s and early 90’s. He has matured immensely over time, especially following the deaths of his ex-wife Whitney Houston, and the daughter (that they had together) Bobbi Krystina.
Robert Berisford Brown was born on February 5th 1969 on a tough housing estate in Boston, USA.
When he was nine years old, he and some childhood friends from the estate formed the group New Edition. Members included Ricky Bell, Mike Bivins, and Ronnie DeVoe, who later on formed the group “Bell, Biv, DeVoe.”
In 1982 they finally got a record deal, and in 1983 they released their U.K. Number One hit “Candy Girl”.
In 1985 Bobby was kicked out of the group due to his rebellious teenage behaviour, and distaste in the musical direction the group was taking. He embarked on a solo career with the release of his debut album “King of Stage” in 1986, but unfortunately, the album didn’t sell well.
However this was just the beginning of bigger and better things to come for Bobby.

In 1987 he went to work with top R’n’B producers Babyface, LA Reid, and Teddy Reilly to complete the album which would make Brown an International superstar with his 1988 release “Don’t Be Cruel”.
The album is thought to be the record that brought the new black musical genre “New Jack Swing” to the mainstream. Using a combination of Hip/Hop, Funk, and Soul driven by a heavy drum machine beat, which would come to dominate the late 80’s and 90’s.
The album sold 8 million copies worldwide, and included hit singles “Don’t be Cruel,” “My Prerogative,” “Every Little Step,” “Roni,” and “Rock Witcha”.
By 1991 he was in a high profile romance with Pop Diva Whitney Houston, and by the following year they were married with the birth of their only child together Bobbi Krystina in 1993.
Apart from two major hits during the 90’s including “Humping Around ” in 1992 and `the K-Klass Remix of “Two Can Play at that Game” in 1995, Bobby Brown’s music was overshadowed by his stormy marriage to Whitney Houston. Drug fuelled and violent, eventually the couple divorced after fifteen years of marriage.
Although he’s found happiness again with his current wife and mother of his other children, its impossible to ignore how much these days Bobby Brown looks like a forlorn and bloated figure, through the years of drug and alcohol abuse.
However most people would like remember him not how he is now, but how he was at the height of his career, for his singing, rapping and energetic dance moves. And for a short time during 1988-89 when he was the undisputed King of New Jack Swing.
