Tips For First Time Gym-Goers

Going to the gym for the first time can be really scary and intimidating. Trust me, I have been there.

You don’t know what all the machines do, how to use them, or even how to turn them on.

Plucking up the courage to step into the gym is a really positive step though, and it will do your body a whole world of good.

We have put together some top tips on what to do when you get into that gym for the first time.

Hopefully, these tips will give the inspiration and confidence to just get stuck in and have fun.

 

1. Go with a friend or gym buddy.

One really easy way to make the whole gym experience just a little less terrifying is to go with a friend, family member or just someone who also wants to try the gym out too.

If this person is an experienced gym user, then all the better, but if not don’t worry.

You can learn together!

By going with someone else, if you make a mistake or you’re confused which machines to use, then at least you can have a laugh together about it.

Plus, it is handy to have a mate to ‘spot’ you if you are doing weights, and to make sure you are actually using the correct technique, hence preventing injuries.

2. Go to the induction.

For some gyms, having a gym induction is an essential procedure for any new members.

However, for some, it isn’t essential (which I think is a big mistake).

You may think that having an induction isn’t all that important, and you might be able to just find your way around the gym by yourself.

However, inductions show you what each individual machine does, how to use them, and they also offer tailored advice depending on your current fitness levels.

They will also show you essentials like the water fountain, changing rooms, and rooms which are used for group classes.

So, don’t skip the induction.

It only takes about twenty minutes anyway, if that.

3. Warm up properly.

Even if you’re just going to the gym to build muscle and use weights, warming up is an essential thing to do if you don’t want any injuries.

The easiest and best way to warm up is to use one of the cardio machines to get blood pumping around your body and prepare your muscles.

You could use the treadmill, the exercise bike, cross trainer or even the step machine.

Walking on the treadmill is also a great way to warm up.

Go on this machine for at least ten minutes, then do some simple muscle stretches after to make sure they are properly prepared.

4. Get kitted out properly.

If there is one thing which is going to destroy your confidence in the gym it is poorly fitting clothes and trainers.

You don’t want to have to be worrying about your sweat patches, or your leggings falling down, or getting blisters on your feet.

So, it is definitely worth investing some good time trying on different styles of workout clothes and seeing what works best for you.

Also, go to a sports shoe shop and get your trainers properly fitted by a specialist – buying online is a big (and costly) risk.

Don’t wear cotton clothing, as it will absorb sweat and get really heavy and soggy – yuck.

Instead look for ‘wicking’ material, which is usually a mix of polyester and Lycra.
