With Mental Health Week passing recently, there’s no better time than now to talk about some super easy ways to boost your mood. We all need to take some time out sometimes to focus on ourselves and our personal happiness and wellbeing. As a society, we sometimes forget that our mental health is actually just as important as our physical health, and there needs to be more awareness about how to keep our mind in tip-top shape.
We have compiled below some top ways about how to boost your mood when you’re feeling a little bit down or when you’ve gone through a difficult time.
1. Talk about your feelings with someone
Talking is probably one of the quickest ways to immediately boost your mood and reduce stress or worrying.
As the old saying goes “a problem shared is a problem halved.”
The trouble can actually be opening up in the first place – you worry that other people will judge you, you will appear weak and you’re concerned people may ridicule your feelings.
It is important to realize that people won’t judge you like this. Everything has low moods and worries, and most people will be more than happy to have a chat with you about your feelings.
Who knows, maybe they needed to open up to someone too? Talking makes you feel like you’re not alone, which is one of the most important ways of alleviating your worries and thus boosting your mood.
2. Treat yourself
Having something to look forward to will always boost your mood.
It doesn’t need to be a big expensive treat – go and get a manicure, buy a new lipstick or go for a fun day out somewhere.
In this modern fast-paced world it is so easy to forget to look after ourselves as well as others, and having a little bit of money to spend on ourselves makes the world of different to our mood.
Why not treat yourself to a new pair of glasses or sunglasses too?
The Savannah S8122 – Tortoise (Sunglasses) are a bargain at only £10, and will add a sense of glamour to your everyday wardrobe. The tortoiseshell pattern and brown lenses are bang on trend and would be the perfect addition to your summer outfit!
3. Get some exercise
🌞HAPPY MAY DAY! 🌷Why's it a bank holiday Monday? 🤔 May Day (1st May) stems from ancient celebrations of spring 🌱- the return to fertility of the land & livestock. Celebrations include crowning a May Queen & dancing around a maypole – much like Swedish midsummer! Hope you have a relaxing 😎 May Day! 📽 @monasterosantarosa #newstarts #bankholidaymonday #fitnessotoast
Exercise releases endorphins, which can make you feel happier and less stressed.
We’re not saying go and run a marathon, but simply going for a walk in the fresh air can often really boost your mood. Why not plug in your iPod with some of your favourite tunes, and stride out in your local park?
Better still, you could join a group exercise class or team sport club. Being part of a group effort can really give you a sense of belonging, with the possibility of making some fab new friends too.
4. Organize your life
Much of the time bad mood and worrying stems from being overwhelmed about the amount of ‘stuff’ you have to do.
You need to go shopping, take the kids to school, finish that project for work, water the garden and walk the dog. When you simply think about all the things you need to get done, it is natural that it will just get on top of you.
You should take 10 minutes to just sit down and plan. Think about everything that needs to be done. Which is the most important and urgent job? What can wait until tomorrow?
Prioritize, and tick off jobs once they are completed. Not only is it really satisfying ticking off chores, it will help you keep calm being to actually see what needs to be completed that day.
5. Eat mood-boosting foods
Did you know that the right food can actually boost your mood? It seems unlikely, but there is actually plenty of scientific evidence which confirms this.
Naturally eating healthy food is great for the physical appearance of your body, but it is also does good internally.
Some of the best mood-boosting foods to eat are:
- Fish (particularly oily fish with lots of Omega 3)
- Lentils and other pulses
- Berries of all kinds (including Goji)
Why not try and incorporate some of these super-foods into your diet and see how you feel? They will also help give you that summer glow – what could be better?
Why not plan a trip to one of these bucket list destinations?
