Sunburn is no fun, anyone who has had to peel off layers of skin or endured an itchy burning epidermis can attest to the fact.

But, finding a good sunscreen can be a nightmare at times too.

It can’t be too sticky, shouldn’t leave that strange white residue on your skin, shouldn’t break you out, has to have a high enough level of SPF,  and doesn’t need to be reapplied every 5 minutes.

There are a lot of requirements for such a seemingly simple summer staple.

Some great options are: Lush’s The Sunblock, which is strangely enough a solid sun screen body butter bar with SPF 30. Vichy’s body spray with SPF 50 is conveniently spray-able.

SunBum which goes up to a whopping 70 SPF and comes in lotions, sprays, and balms. The trusty old Neutrogena Ultra Sheer that comes in an array of SPF choices.

These babies need to be the right shape for your face, they can be used to bring a pop of colour or pattern to an otherwise monochromatic outfit, they shield your eyes from harmful UV rays obviously, and prevent you from squinting and making those pesky yet inevitable crows feet form prematurely.

Round shapes are all the rage right about now, as are subtle hints of colour, check out the fun options below.

A classic take on Ringo-esque round sunnies, with yellow and rose tones and a twisted gold frame:

Yellow details, a violet tinge and again the shape of the season, round:

Nothing brings on a summer nautical vibes more than crisp white; metallic details only add interest to these statement sunnies:

A summertime staple, whatever your body type, just know which shapes are flattering.

A good option that works for everyone is the High Waisted (to hide your lunchtime pouch), or mid length (to keep it classy) lightly distressed jeans shorts with embroidery or applique detail to keep up with the times.

Add a little character to an otherwise basic piece, and you’re all set.

Nothing brings about summer vibes quite like a well chosen playlist.

Here are a couple of great choices to get you started: Summer Jam by The Underdog Project, and LUV by Tory Lanez.

Keeping the harmful sun-rays off your luscious locks is a good idea.

Hat hair isn’t particularly attractive however, so keep your eyes open for breathable fabrics or woven hats with a wide brim. Try adding a bright scarf for detail or go for one with an emblazoned quote or fun ribbon.

Mix and match bikinis are a life saver, as are hidden support swimsuits.

If you opt for the bikini, check for your exact size and measurements in top and bottom separately. A high waisted bottom is always flattering, and look for enough support in your choice of top no matter your size.

Bring attention to one or the other by opting for a pattern and block color mix; patterns will emphasize and draw the eye to your best asset.

Versatile Cover-Up

Choosing a cover up wisely can make it a versatile piece on any holiday or beach adventure.

If it is not too sheer or casual it can take you through several different scenarios, from an evening meal to an afternoon activity.

Try a flowing yet tapered shape in a lightweight fabric, like linen. A solid colour is a great choice to let that great tan take centre stage.

Setting Spray That Stays Put

There’s nothing like getting your makeup just the way you like it, going out to face the heat and catching a glimpse of your reflection, only to find it’s all faded or smudged.

Setting spray is your not so new best-friend, get a mattifying version for skin prone to oiliness and you’re all set, literally.

Comfy Breathable Flats

Sandals with intricate straps can be beautiful yet painful when worn for a full day or get slippery in the heat.

Canvas shoes come in a kaleidoscope of colours and patterns. Breathable woven and lace options and are great for summer days spent flea market shopping or exploring.

Anti- Frizz Hair Products

Tame that frizz with hair products created to do just that, there are countless options.

Try one with SPF included to protect you hair and kill two birds with one stone. Bumble & Bumble’s Hairdresser’s Invisible Oil Heat/UV Protective Primer is a great option.

Now you’re all set for summer, here are some budget ideas of how to make the most of it, jump right in, the water’s fine
