Visit The Scottish Highlands

The Scottish Highlands are home to some of the most spectacular scenery in the UK, with towering mountains and lush lochs the norm inland. The Highlands are also said to be where Hogwarts is located, which just adds to the magic.

Venture to the edges and there are miles of stunning coastline to discover, as well as countless isles to explore.

If it’s your first time visiting this region, here are a few key places to be sure to stop off.

Glenfinnan Viaduct

While it doesn’t sound particularly glamorous as a holiday recommendation, you’ll be glad you made the trip if you go the Glenfinnan Viaduct.

It’s a railway viaduct located on the West Highland Line in Invernessshire and overlooks the Glenfinnan Monument and Loch Shiel.

But you’ll be more likely to recognize it from the Harry Potter films, where it appeared as part of the journey taken by the Hogwarts Express.

Why not invest in some Harry Potter specs to get the whole experience? We like these from Infinity:

The Highland Wildlife Park

Animal lovers will adore the Highlands — there’s plenty of wildlife to see, from puffins and otters to wildcats and golden eagles.

The Highland Wildlife Park is definitely worth a visit too, where you’ll be able to see hundreds of species roaming the awe-inspiring terrain.

It’s located within the Cairngorms National Park and features a main reserve safari area and walk-around enclosures.

Mallaig

Mallaig is a port town in Lochaber on the west coast of Scotland, and is the place to be if you want to take trips to Isle of Skye or the Isles of Rùm, Eigg, Muck, and Canna.

You can also catch a boat to Knoydart, and if you have time we highly recommend it.

Only accessible by water, or by a 16-mile trek through some hilly countryside, Knoydart is home to The Old Forge Inn, the most isolated pub in mainland Britain.

It’s also a National Scenic Area and so is popular with ramblers and mountaineers.

If you’re collecting Munros (a mountain in Scotland with a height over 3,000 feet) you’ll find the Munros of Ladhar Bheinn, Luinne Bheinn, Meall Buidhe and Sgurr na Cìche here.

Ben Nevis

Ben Nevis is the highest mountain in the British Isles at 1.345 metres above sea level.

It’s located close to the town of Fort William, which is easy to get to by car or train.

Seasoned mountaineers can can choose between routes up, but if you’re into the view but not the leg work there’s a cable car that can take you some of the way to the top.

From here you can wander round, take some snaps of the scenery, and even grab a bite to eat in the cafe before heading back down.
