Legend: Dizzie Gillespie"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>With his trademark beret, thick black rimmed glasses, puffed out cheeks and whimsical personality, Dizzy Gillespie has become one of the most influential figures in Jazz with his virtuoso performances as a trumpeter and scat vocalist, as well as being a talented composer and songwriter.<\/p>\n<p>He was born John Birks Gillespie in 1917 in South Carolina U.S.A.\u00a0to a father who was a labourer and part time\u00a0band leader.<\/p>\n<p>Dizzie learned\u00a0how to play\u00a0a few instruments from his dad growing up.<\/p>\n<p>Gillespie taught\u00a0himself how to play the\u00a0Trombone and Trumpet.<\/p>\n<p>For a couple of years he went to Laurinburg Institute in his neighboring state of North Carolina where he performed in\u00a0a band.<\/p>\n<p>This gig\u00a0earned him a reputation as a\u00a0joker and his nickname &#8220;Dizzy.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In his late teens, Gillespie got a job playing at the Teddy Hill Orchestra as a replacement for his idol trumpeter John Eldridge.<\/p>\n<p>It was here that he made his first recording.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/BUNG-s2jdB1\/?tagged=dizzygillespie\">https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/BUNG-s2jdB1\/?tagged=dizzygillespie<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In 1939, he joined Mario Bauza at the Cap Calloway&#8217;s\u00a0Orchestra.<\/p>\n<p>Gillespie\u00a0had already been experimenting with various styles which was\u00a0only further encouraged by Buaza, who\u00a0created the hybrid Afro-Cuban Jazz style.<\/p>\n<p>After two years into the job, Gillespie was\u00a0given the sack from the Calloway&#8217;s orchestra\u00a0for causing a cut on the buttocks of Calloway with a knife,\u00a0after he had a go at Gillespie for\u00a0accusing him of messing around with spitballs.<\/p>\n<p>During the late forties, Gillespie began to really embrace the\u00a0Afro-Cuban\u00a0Jazz\u00a0genre which he had been introduced to\u00a0by his colleague Mario\u00a0Mario Bauza and continued to add\u00a0Black American Jazz rhythms.<\/p>\n<p>Gillespie&#8217;s use of his trademark bent trumpet came about as a result of an accident which happened in early 1953, when two dancers fell unto the instrument (whilst it was on a stand on stage) causing the bell\u00a0to bend\u00a0at a 45 degree\u00a0angle straight up and when he played it he actually liked the tone better than what it had been before\u00a0it had been\u00a0damaged.<\/p>\n<p>After that he would have all of his subsequent trumpets made that way for the his career, Gillespie would tour such\u00a0places\u00a0like Africa, The Middle East, and more frequently Latin America, where he would often return from with fresh new ideas for his own compositions and with new artists\u00a0who would later go on to become famous themselves.<\/p>\n<p>In later years, Gillespie would continue to tour and perform, as well making appearances on shows like Sesame Street, The Cosby Show, and Muppet Show.<\/p>\n<p><a the age of 75.<\/p>\n<p>He\u00a0is survived by his widow (who died eleven years later)\u00a0and daughter who is also a Jazz musician and whom has a son of her\u00a0own.<\/p>\n<p>He left behind a body of work and compositions that have merged different styles of Jazz.<\/p>\n<p>Rooted from his African\/Afro-American background in which he derived a great sense of pride and his whimsical sense of
