Travel Must: Zanzibar in Tanzania

Amongst the many reasons to visit Tanzania, Zanzibar definitely shows up quite high on the list. Zanzibar is an island off the coast of  Tanzania, full of history.

For example, it played a part in the slave trade and is also the birthplace of Freddie Mercury.

Experience the beautiful white sand beaches, clear waters and home to amazing fruits and spices.

It is one of the few places that I would go to again and again, there is plenty to do and see, but while you are there, also remember to relax.

Here are some experiences to enjoy whilst in Zanzibar.

White Sands

Zanzibar is home to some of the most amazing beaches – with white soft sands and clear blue water.

Nungwi is known to have the best beaches in Zanzibar, but you will also find some incredible ones in Paje as well.

Spend some time relaxing on the beach and enjoying the sounds of the waves breaking.

It doesn’t get much better than that does it?!

It does get pretty hot in Zanzibar, especially during the summer months.

Keep your skin protected from the sun.

Keep a pair of Adidas Originals AORT004 sunglasses handy too – they will keep you protected and it doesn’t hurt that they are so stylish:

Fresh Coconut

Whilst you are enjoying the white sandy beaches, you’d do well to have a freshly cut coconut in your hand.

Madafu, swahili for coconut water is the most refreshing drink whether you are relaxing on the beach or walking around the town.

Remember to ask the vendor to remove the coconut flesh (malai) once you are done with the juice – it makes a great snack.

Explore Stone Town

Whilst in Zanzibar, enjoy exploring stone town.

It is the heart of the island, and is full of life and culture.

Walk through the various narrow streets and admire the beautifully carved Zanzibari doors and the coastal Arabic architecture.

If you need a break, go have some delicious Italian food and gelato at Amore Mio.

If you’re lucky you may even spot some dolphins from that vantage point.

Snorkel, Dive & Search For Dolphins

Zanzibar hosts some of the most beautiful sea life.

If you are a fan of diving, or snorkeling, save some time to explore the sea life.

You can even swim with dolphins if you are lucky.

Snorkeling in Zanzibar is just as great and was the first time I swam with a sea turtle.

Sunsets & Sunrises

There is something to be said about the sunsets and sunrises in Zanzibar.

The reflections over the ocean, and the colours in the sky are so beautiful.

I would highly recommend getting up early at least once to see the sunrise – you can watch the fishermen prepare to go out to sea on their dhows.

You can even go on a sunset dhow cruise, which is also an incredible experience.

Explore Jozani Forest

Jozani forest is a good change of scenery (if you ever need one).

Perhaps go on a tour of the forest with a guide who can talk you through the various flora and fauna in the forest.

There is also a mangrove forest with a boardwalk which will let you explore and take in the views of the forest.

If you are interested in spices, there is another forest where you can be taken on a spice tour – its fascinating.

Don’t Forget To Just Relax

Regardless of how long you are in Zanzibar for, and what you plan on doing, remember to take some time to relax and enjoy the slower pace of life.

Enjoy the views, fresh food, kind people, the various cultures and the sounds of the ocean.

I can assure you, you will be aching to be back – no amount of time is ever enough.
