Holiday Guide: Las Palmas de Gran Canaria

Think beach holiday – relax on the sun lounger and soak up as much sun as you possibly can, while reading your Kindle loaded with books and a freshly squeezed juice sitting poolside.

If you cannot wait for summer to arrive in Britain – then how about going on a last-minute weekend getaway to one of Gran Canarias’s beaches?

With 25 to 27 degree temperatures, that stays pretty much the same all year around, you cannot go wrong here.

Pack up your favourite pair of sunglasses, a hot bikini and lots of sunscreen to help you survive that afternoon heat on the beach.

If you want to avoid the crowded southern coastline and experience local lifestyle and food like a true culture vulture, then I highly recommend Las Palmas beaches for an ultimate holiday experience.

Why? Because it not only has perfect warm weather, but also one of the most magnificent beaches with golden sand – Play de las Canteras, that stretches for 3km, making it the favourite beach among travellers and locals alike.

Since it is a city beach, you can meet the locals and brush up your Spanish speaking skills.

The beach has a beautiful promenade, where you can have a relaxing stroll while you discover the local shops. You will see people jogging, biking, playing beach volleyball, football, and even surfing as you go further along the beach towards the Alfredo Kraus Auditorium.

A family-friendly beach where the tide remains low. Let the kids be happy as they make sandcastles and roll in the sand or take a slide or a swing at the playground on the beach, while you lie down on the towel.
Las Palmas is not just an ideal place for families, but equally perfect for romantic holidays. Watch the sunset as you hold hands and kiss your lover. When the sun goes down, you can enjoy a candle-lit dinner with your partner at one of the cafés along the beach.

It is a gastronomical heaven with restaurants serving amazing sea-food, from grilled tiger prawns to fried squid and octopus. Don’t forget to try the famous Canarian baked potato dish served with usually grilled fish – papas arrugadas, while you listen to the saxophone or flute played by the artists performing at the promenade.

From puppeteers to couples bursting into spontaneous Spanish dance moves, it’s a carnival every night. You will find the promenade alive until late. With hundreds of bars and discs for nightlife crawlers, this place does not miss a thing.

Still looking for more?

Why not do some sightseeing on the hop-on, hop-off bus tour and visit some Spanish-colonial architecture or go to the botanical garden for rare plant species. Maybe a day out riding the water slides at the Aquasur or Ocean Park will suit you more.

Or a trip to the historical quarter of Vegueta will pique your interest. You can also attend concerts or the Gran Canaria film festival at the auditorium. Or just stay at the beach, for surfing or snorkelling.

With so much to see and do, a weekend may feel too short, so perhaps take a week-long holiday and spend your Easter hunting for seashells and crabs, instead of eggs.

After reading this, you are just itching to travel to a sunny beach now, aren’t you?
