Lens Types

Single vision lenses can be used for seeing in the distance, viewing your computer screen or just reading up close, these lenses will just contain one correction over the whole lens hence the name “Single Vision”

Distance/general use (single vision)

These lenses contain your prescription for seeing in the distance; whether you're walking down the street, driving your car or sitting at home watching TV, you will have your vision corrected over the whole lens area.

Intermmediate/Computer use (single vision)

These lenses can be used for computer use (VDU) where the working distance has been set by your optician for use at arms distance (Usually approx 60cm). Your prescription may have been issued specifically for computer (VDU use) or you may have an INTER ADD which will be used in conjunction with your distance prescription. If in doubt we would suggest speaking to your optician to confirm your intermediate prescription, alternatively you may attach a copy of your prescription to your order for us to check.

Reading/near use (single vision)

Reading spectacles are required when reading or concentrating on material close up. If you look up and across the room while wearing them, everything appears blurred. Your prescription may have been written out specifically for Reading or you may have a NEAR or READING ADD which will be used in conjunction with your distance prescription, you may attach a copy of your prescription to your order for us to check if you wish.

Bifocals - Blended Line

These lenses contain two prescriptions, the top part of the lens will be used for your distance vision and the bottom part will be used for reading, so you only ever need one pair of spectacles. These Bi-Focals are a round blended line so making them semi-invisible and therefore less ageing!

Bifocals - D28 Flat Top

These lenses contain two prescriptions, again the top part of the lens will be used for your distance vision and the bottom part will be used for reading, these lenses are in the shape of a D on it’s side, the the bifocal has a flat top and a curved bottom, these are the most common type of bifocal, they are extremely successful as the reading area is very stable.

This type of bifocal is also available in Photo-chromic lenses, Polarised lenses and Super Thin 1.6 index lenses.

Varifocals/MultiFocals/Progressives

These lenses combine three visions all in one lens. The distance and reading portions of the lens blend together with a gradual progression from one to the other, giving a third area of the lens, intermediate vision which allows for clear vision at arms distance, so providing glasses to see in the far, middle and near distance with no dividing lines or segments - just one simple lens for all uses.

Varifocals are available in standard, Photo-chromic, Polarised, Super Thin 1.6 index, Ultra Super Thin 1.67 index and Ultra X Super Thin 1.74 index lenses.

However, varifocals in general are not 100% successful either online or in the High Street, you should understand, there is a risk buying multi-focal lenses online and we cannot offer the after-service of the High Street, but our product is sold at a very competitive rate and we leave the choice to the customer.

Rear Surface FreeForm progressive lenses

Our rear surface Varifocal design is optimised for each addition, for near vision, the lens also varies with the addition to maximise the reading area and improve the binocular vision.  There is a good balance between different visual zones to enable a smooth transition from far to near areas.

Thanks to its soft power profile, improved lens asymmetry and variable lens, the adaptation to our Rear surface Varifocal lenses are made easier compared traditional lens manufacturing.

Freeform rear surface Varifocals are about to revolutionize the eyewear industry as they will give clearer, wider fields of vision, these are available
as standard, Photo-chromic, Polarised, Super Thin 1.6 index, Ultra Super Thin 1.67 index lenses and Ultra X Super Thin 1.74 index lenses.

Our High Impact lenses offer superior optical clarity, whilst delivering a light weight, impact resistant lens giving the highest level of protection for your eyes.

This excellent material combined with our Scratch Resistance and anti-reflection treatments provide our wearers with comfort and safety. This organic material’s structure is arranged in a crisscross fashion, as a result they are less likely to fracture in comparison to regular plastic lenses, Furthermore these are lighter, thinner and much more impact-resistant than regular plastic lenses.

Our High Impact lenses block 100% of the suns harmful UV rays, as well as incorporating an Anti-Reflective Coating, anti-smudge, dust repellent and water repellent treatments as standard. High Impact lenses enhance the appearance by up to 25% in comparison with standard lenses.

While our High Impact lenses are virtually unbreakable, this lens is not designed as safety eyewear and should not be considered a permanent shield against eye injury. These lenses range from +6.00 throught to -6.00 with a CLY up to ±2.00.

Polycarbonate 1.59 Lenses

Polycarbonate lenses are thinner and lighter than standard lenses offering full 100% UV protection which is built into the lens material itself, offering total protection from harmful solar radiation.

Polycarbonate lenses are made from a similar material to that of bulletproof glass, these lenses are 10 times more impact resistant than standard plastic lenses however this material is relatively soft, subsequently polycarbonate lenses need a scratch-resistant coating to prevent surface scratches. SelectSpecs offer a scratch resistant coating and Anti-reflection treatment at no extra cost to give you the
full protection required.

This "softness" gives polycarbonate lenses their ability to absorb energy without breaking, making them an excellent choice for rimless frames or sports eyewear because these are less likely to fracture than regular plastic lenses.

Polycarbonate is a thermoplastic material which is produced from small pellets, these pellets are heated to melting point, from here this liquid polycarbonate is then injected into lens molds by a process known as injection molding. Most other plastic lenses are made from a cast molding process, where a liquid plastic material is baked for long periods in lens forms, solidifying the liquid plastic to create a lens. These lenses range from +4.00 throught to -6.00 with a CLY up to ±2.00

Photochromic (Transition) Lenses

These are lenses that react to UV light. Whilst indoors they are almost as clear as standard plastic when deactivated (approximately 15% absorption), outdoors they respond to the harmful UVA and UVB rays darkening down as sunglasses, serving to protect your eyes against the long term effects of sunlight. They are available in Grey, Brown, Pink and Purple, these all filter 100% of UV light.

Pink and Purple Photo-chromic lenses react to light in the same way as the Grey and Brown lenses, however they are a subtle tint, approximately tinting to 30% absorption when in the Sun.

It is strongly advised that photochromic glasses are not used for night driving or in any dark environment in which critical judgment is required. These lenses ange from +10.00 throught to -15.00 with a CLY up to ±6.00

Photochromic (Transition) Lenses darken to UV light.

Polarised Lenses

Polarising Lenses give the maximum protection against the suns harmful rays, eliminating 99.9% of glare.  This improves vision and comfort making them ideal for driving, providing enhanced ability to perceive contrast and improving depth perception.

Polarising SunglassLenses are available in Brown, Grey and Green, with 85% absorption. Anti-reflection treatment will reduce absorption by approximately 5% however we would recommend this coating to reduce surface reflections on the lenses. These lenses ange from +6.00 throught to -10.00 with a CLY up to ±4.00

Polarised lenses reduce glare and give colours a more vibrant look.
