Summer Eyewear Inspiration: Gucci’s 70s Style SS16 Campaign

Gucci spring/summer 16 campaign seventies eyewear

Seventies style is set to be a huge trend next season and Gucci are leading the way with their recent advertising campaign.

Since Alessandro Michele took over the label in 2015, the fashion house has taken on somewhat of a decadent, romantic look with a vintage twist and their latest offering is no different.

Filmed in the city of Berlin, the Gucci SS16 campaign features a gang of cool models who raced around a shopping mall whilst looking amazing in seventies-style get ups. Showcasing the brand’s trademark flamboyance, the outfits combined gorgeous florals and bold colours with luxe metallics and some retro-inspired accessories to create an amazing look.

From boho psychedelic florals and peasant blouses to cool girl blazers and flared trousers, the seventies look is easy to adopt and suits almost everyone. To get the look, you can go all-out with a head-to-toe seventies inspired outfit or just add a touch of retro style to your look with some carefully chosen accessories.

Of course, one of the best ways to add a subtle retro nod to an outfit is with glasses, and we couldn’t help but notice some of the stand-out eyewear choices in the video. The campaign featured a selection of seventies-style specs that give an authentic look to the models’ outfits.

So, let’s take a look at some of Gucci’s best eyewear styles that are perfect for channeling that seventies vibe.

Seventies-Inspired Statement Specs

One of the most eye-catching looks from the Gucci SS16 campaign were these unique square-shaped over-sized specs which just scream seventies style, especially when paired with a glitzy green trouser suit and a retro bowl hair cut!

While these huge glittery glasses make a real fashion statement, they’re more runway chic than easy-to-wear every day style. But what else would you expect from one of the biggest fashion houses in the world?

Luckily, you can get an under-stated take on this seventies trend, by choosing bold shapes and intriguing design details. The new Gucci GG 3769 glasses are a perfect blend of retro and contemporary style, featuring a thick wayfarer frame and a two-tone finish.

Retro Tortoiseshell Frames

Tortoiseshell glasses were all the rage in the 1970s, so it’s really no surprise that they featured in Gucci’s SS16 video. The good news is that tortoiseshell is timeless and still looks great today.

For a nostalgic look, take inspiration from the model above and team a pair of tortoiseshell wayfarers with a cute knitted hat and some hippy-chic floral prints.

When it comes to tortoiseshell specs, Gucci’s SS16 eyewear collection will leave you spoilt for choice. There’s the round-framed GG1111 glasses and the simple GG1112 rectangular specs, but our favourite are the GG3783 glasses (below). These stylish specs feature seventies-esque wayfarer frames with a unique twist and are perfect for any occasion.

Throwback Gold Aviator Glasses

Gucci also showcased some rather unique menswear looks for spring/summer 16 which are sure to set trends next season. Our favourite look for men were the gold-framed aviators worn in the video and also by the model above. These groovy glasses are the epitome of seventies eyewear.

While the Gucci glasses featured aren’t yet available on SelectSpecs, you can get the look with any pair of gold aviator frames. The Ray Ban RX6049 aviator glasses are a classic seventies-inspired choice for men or women. Pair them with denim and retro knitwear for a totally on-trend look.
