Our favourite spectacle-wearing superhero is back on cinema screens this month in the latest installment of the DC Comics movies – Superman v Batman: Dawn of Justice. This time, the Man of Steel, played by Henry Cavill takes on Ben Affleck as the Dark Knight in an epic battle between the two characters.
The film, which is set to be a huge box office success, also features Jesse Eisenberg as villain Lex Luthor and Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman. While Ben Affleck is new to the cast, Henry Cavill plays the same role as 2013’s Man of Steel.
Take a look at the trailer below to get a taste of the action.
As you can see, Cavill’s Clark Kent is still wearing his iconic glasses in the film. Well, how else would he disguise himself as an undercover superhero?
Throughout the years, each actor who played Clark Kent brought a new look to the role with the glasses they wore. There was Christopher Reeve’s tortoiseshell specs in the beginning, then Dean Caines horn-rimmed glasses in the New Adventures of Superman and, of course, Tom Welling’s wayfarers in Smallville.
In Superman v Batman; Dawn of Justice, Henry Cavill gives Clark Kent a contemporary, if slightly darker makeover with the glasses he wears. 2016’s Clark Kent protects his identity with a pair of large, thick-rimmed glasses with black frames.
Clark Kent’s glasses have become an iconic part of his persona, just as famous as Superman’s red cape and Batman’s mask. However, over the years some have questioned the idea that a simple pair of glasses could act as an effective guise. Can a pair of glasses really conceal Superman’s true identity? Well, this week actor Henry Cavill proved that, in fact, they can.
The actor posted a video to Instagram in which he stood in one of New York’s busiest areas, Times Square, wearing a superman T-shirt but no glasses. Despite the huge Batman v Superman movie posters surrounding him, nobody recognised him. He captioned the post: “Dear Doubter, The glasses are good enough. Regards, Superman.” So there we have it…definitive prove that Clark Kent’s glasses are the ultimate disguise!
Clark Kent Glasses
The glasses Cavill is wearing in Batman v Superman; Dawn of Justice was a mystery to us at first. We thought perhaps Clark Kent doesn’t want to reveal his secrets, or maybe Cavill had them specially made for the role? But we soon found out the glasses he wears are a Tom Davies Bespoke design – so he did have them specially made for him!
But you don’t need to have your glasses specially made for you to get the same look because SelectSpecs have some great alternatives. Whether you want to go incognito, or you’re just keen to get Clark Kent’s suave and sophisticated spectacled look, here are three pairs of glasses inspired by Henry Cavill’s on-screen style.
Savannah P2249
For an affordable take on Clark Kent’s look, check out the Savannah P2249 glasses from SelectSpecs. These prescription glasses are almost identical to the pair Henry Cavill wears in the movie, featuring plain black rectangular frames and two silver dots on each side. And the best part? They cost just £11.
Ray Ban RX5184 New Wayfarer
Ray Ban’s vast eyewear collection covers just about every look, including the one worn by Superman’s alter ego. The Ray Ban RX5184 New Wayfarer glasses are extremely similar to Clark Kent’s classic black wayfarer specs as seen in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.
Chiara Vision UCV1007
Last but not least, the UCV1007 glasses from Chiara Vision won’t give you Superman’s special powers, but they will give you his off-duty look. Featuring black wayfarer frames and silver side detail, they’re a great pair of dupes if you’re looking for high quality designer eyewear just like Henry Cavill’s specs.
So, who will win in the battle of Batman v Superman? You’ll have to watch the movie to find out, but Clark Kent is definitely our eyewear style hero!
