Musicians & Their Favourite Sunglasses

Since as far back as I can remember, musicians have loved wearing sunglasses on and off stage. Whether it’s for privacy reasons, to hide insecurities or just to look 100 % cool, it seems you’re not a somebody without a pair of rock n’ roll shades.

With fashion and music so intwined, a musician’s look is crucial to how they are perceived by their fans and critics.

We’ve rounded up a few of the most iconic musicians and their best eyewear looks below.

Elton John

Elton John is a prolific performer, no doubt about it.

But, Elton knows that a good performer is nothing without a little showmanship?

The musician has donned an array of glasses over the years, from ones with feathers all the way down to regular square glasses.

Either way, they are a part of his identity.

Also we love that Elton was rocking rose tinted glasses long before they came 2017’s hot new fashion item.

Michael Jackson

Adored by fans worldwide, Michael Jackson knew how to record a hit.

Outside of his amazing singing and performing abilities, Michael was also well-known to wear dark sunglasses.

One of his favourite and most recognized pair of sunglasses was made by Ray-Ban.

The singer was part of the 80s revival of Ray-Ban – the artist certainly helped drive sales.

Kurt Cobain

Nearly 24 years ago, Kurt Cobain’s signature look (other than his grunge aesthetic, dirty-blond hair, and destroyed low-slung denim) was a pair of women’s white oval sunglasses from Christian Roth’s 6558 series.

Cut to present day and the current nostalgia for all things 90s, and the iconic shades are suddenly everywhere.

Put on a pair and you’re basically paying homage to the late Nirvana frontman.

This look has been popular among contemporary music stars – especially among rappers.

During weekend 1 at Coachella, Pharrell and Takeoff of Migos both wore similar white oval frames.

Earlier in the year, Playboi Carti performed at SXSW in Acne’s Mustangs in a pink version.

And in the last two years, Jay Z, Wiz Khalifa, Gucci Mane, Harry Styles, Lil Uzi Vert, Lil Yachty and Ian Connor have all been snapped wearing the style.

The iconic frames just won’t go away, and are so heavily associated with 90s grunge that the sunglasses are bound to remain a firm fixture on the fashion scene.

John Lennon

The late talented musician was well known for his trademark round glasses.

John Lennon usually opted for a small mental frame pair of glasses and sunglasses.

Sometime he went for a tinted lens, and was often spotted wearing a pair of amber coloured lenses.

If you want to invest in a pair of sunglasses like the ones John Lennon was famed for wearing then we love the Ray-Ban round metal frames.

Will.i.am

As a creative innovator, Will.i.am uses fashion to make sure he always looks different from one day to the next.

Seen in a recent Instagram post wearing large round shades with white frames, Will very subtly matches his glasses to his outfit.

He does this with many of his outfits, and is often seen wearing statement, oversized frames as a result.

As a big fan of eyewear, Will is very rarely seen without a pair of cool glasses, though he doesn’t really have a signature eyewear style.
