Macular degeneration is the leading cause of severe vision loss in people aged 60 and above. It is a painless, age related condition that can affect one or both of the eyes. It is not unusual for one eye to experience macular degeneration before the other and during these early stages, you may not have any other symptoms.

This vision impeding condition occurs when the macula, the central part of the retina, starts to deteriorate and although there is nothing that can reverse the ageing process, there’s lots we can do in earlier life to prevent it. Plus there’s plenty we can do at the later stage to slow down the process too.

Ultimately though, modern medicine has not yet found a cure. And those who develop the very early signs of the condition need to be prepared for loss of wide angle vision (such as blurring or distortions), contrast sensitivity (it becomes difficult to see textures and subtle changes in the environment), poor tolerance for changing light levels, worsened night vision and need for brighter lighting, and impaired depth perception.

For low vision complaints and conditions such as macular degeneration, there are a number of vision enhancing accessories that could be handy to use around the home. Here are some magnifying tools which you may find helpful.
