Hearing FAQ's

Frequently asked questions regarding hearing products

Why buy online?

By purchasing one of our hearing aids online you will be getting the device at a lower price than your typical high street brand. We meet all hearing aid requirements from a basic need of simply hearing the TV better to having a fully digital and programmable hearing aid allowing you to experience the best hearing quality a hearing aid can achieve.

What’s the difference between hearing aids bought from a retailer and hearing aids bought online?

In short, there’s no real difference between the two devices. Online, we offer a condensed range which makes choosing your device much easier. When bought in person from a hearing aid provider, most charge a premium for device aftercare. When bought online instead, we tune your hearing aids to your specific hearing requirements, and you can self-adjust the aids’ settings as well.

In some cases, some people may need that aftercare more than others and this can be a great gateway in your hearing aid journey or an option of adding a fantastic spare set at the fraction of the cost.

Do I suffer from hearing loss?

We tend to lose our hearing in a slow manner which can make it hard to recognise that you may have a hearing impairment. Ironically, the hearing loss sufferer is usually the last one to know - family members, friends or colleagues are often the first to recognise or realise a loss is present.

There can be clear signs that your hearing is not entirely as it should be:

  • Television is muffled and requires a regular increase in volume
  • Family members complain the TV/ radio is too loud
  • Difficulty in following conversations especially in crowded and noisy environments such as restaurants, cafes etc.
  • Feel like you need to concentrate more and strain when you listen to someone talk
  • Feel left out of conversations and miss a key part in a sentence or a joke

All these are typical signs of a hearing impairment and can lead to a feeling of isolation and anxiety. Don’t worry; you are not alone, and you can certainly do something about it.

Many people find it hard to come to terms with the idea of wearing hearing aids and we fully understand this. Many people leave it for the problem to intensify but the earlier you take action, the better.

Even at the early stage of hearing loss, when hearing is just starting to deteriorate, hearing aids can help maintain neural pathways in your brain responsible for hearing. Your brain needs time to re-adjust to hearing again and the longer it is left untreated, the longer the brain takes to re-adjusts.

Are hearing aids right for me?

'Turn down that TV', 'I've already told you', 'pardon', 'everyone mumbles these days'. Sound familiar? Don't worry, you're not alone.

Hearing loss is a very common problem and generally goes undiagnosed for many years. The average person leaves it 7.5 years before seeking help with their hearing.

If you believe you have hearing loss, then it is important to have a hearing test. Many recent studies have shown that hearing loss that goes undetected for some time can lead to an increased chance of Dementia or Alzheimer’s.

Do you offer warranty on the hearing aids?

Our digital hearing aid range does include a 2-year warranty at no additional charge. Our non-digital hearing aids (Cadenza T and Cadenza C) are supplied with a 12 month warranty.

The warranty covers any fault with the digital hearing aid and a replacement will be arranged.

How do I get a copy of my Audiogram?

There are various ways you can obtain a hearing test. You can visit any number of Audiology retailers on the high-street. The majority offer free hearing tests, make sure you ask for a copy of your results so it can be sent to us for fine tuning of your digital hearing aid.

You can also contact your GP to get a hearing test free on the NHS, please make sure you get a copy of your results to be able to send to us.

What if my hearing changes and the hearing aids need adjusting?

Digital hearing aids can be re-adjusted as many times as required – if your hearing were to change then the aid can be re-programmed to match that change. If you are not happy with the sound of the hearing aid, then you can contact us for a consultation and a member of the Audiology team will assist you by adjusting the hearing aid remotely*.

If your hearing aid does not have the remote programming feature, then alternatively you can send it back to us where we make the necessary adjustments. Information on how to do this will be supplied with your purchase.

*only available on certain digital hearing aid models.

How do I know what hearing aid I need?

All our hearing aids cover a wide range of hearing losses. However, a severe hearing loss is best managed by a local Audiologist. We recommend that an audiogram is sent to us so that our in-house Audiology team can limit the selection of hearing aids that are suitable for your loss.

How long will it take to receive my new hearing aid?

We aim to programme your hearing aid and have it dispatched and delivered to your door within 7-10 working days.

They will be posted to you by your chosen method.

What if something goes wrong with my hearing aid?

You can contact us and schedule a consultation with our in-house Audiology team, where we can discuss the problem and try and find a way to resolve it. Hearing aids do not tend to go wrong, the most common cause of the hearing aid going wrong is ear wax blocking the earpiece. This can normally be prevented with regular cleaning and maintenance of the device.

Each hearing aid comes with instructions on cleaning and maintenance and our digital hearing aid range comes with a 2-year warranty that covers any fault with the device.

Your hearing aid can be sent back to us for an in-depth check and if the in-house Audiology team can fix it, it will then be returned to you via your preferred postal method.

Can hearing aids help Tinnitus?

The simple answer is yes – hearing aids are a common management tool for tinnitus sufferers.

Tinnitus is a common condition and can be a sign of hearing loss. If you experience any sudden hearing loss with tinnitus accompanied by dizziness or pulsating tinnitus, then please consult your GP immediately.

Tinnitus generally occurs due to neural pathways being interrupted or not picked up due to hearing loss. This typically leaves the sufferer with a high-pitched ringing or buzzing in their ears or head. A hearing aid helps stimulate these neural pathways by amplifying sound that would otherwise have been missed – this ultimately helps mask the tinnitus making it less noticeable and, in some cases, go completely.

Do hearing aids need batteries?

Most hearing aids do require batteries but with advancements in technology we are seeing more and more rechargeable hearing aids coming to market. Our range of hearing aids comprise of battery-operated hearing aids as well as rechargeable devices.

Should I get one hearing aid or two?

As a general rule, if a hearing aid Audiologist has noted that you have a hearing loss in both ears, then it is recommended to have a pair to help both of your ears with the hearing loss that is present.

Some users prefer starting with one hearing aid to allow them to get used to wearing one and then eventually opt for a second hearing aid. The general consensus within the industry is that a pair is best (if a hearing loss is present in both ears), but this ideology may not apply to everyone.

What is the maintenance cost of a hearing aid?

Every purchase comes with a set of batteries, cleaning tool and tubing. Batteries do need replacing periodically, as does the tubing and the domes (the earpieces).

A pack of batteries can last anywhere between 1 month to 3 months, depending on what battery your device requires. One pack contains 6 batteries.

The hearing aid tube is recommended to be replaced every 2-4 months.

The dome needs replacing along with the hearing aid tube – if your device has a click sleeve dome it is recommended to replace it every 8-10 weeks (6 click domes per pack).

Some hearing aids also required wax guards, which need replacing at the same time as the click domes (every 8-10 weeks).

How do I download the app to control my new hearing aid?

If your hearing aid is compatible with the Signia app, then you can download it from the Apple App store for free (requires IOS 9.3 or later).

For Android users – download the app from the Google Play Store. Note that it is not compatible with all Android phones (requires Android 5.0 or later).

The Signia app allows you to change the hearing aid programme, adjust the hearing aids volume and adjust the bass and treble levels of your device.

A Signia remote control is also available if the free app is not suitable for you.

A QR code is provided with your purchase to directly download the app. Manual instructions are also included within the manual of any hearing aid compatible with the Signia app.
