Lens Coatings

Lens coatings are essential for ensuring clear and optimal vision. From providing 100% UV protection, reducing glare from lights and electronic devices, to also increasing the life of your glasses by protecting them from daily wear and tear

Our Standard Coatings

Our essential coatings are available free of charge and are applied to your lenses as standard*.

UV protection*

Extended exposure to the sun's UV rays not only damages the skin but can be equally damaging to the structure of the eye which can possibly lead to cataracts, macular degeneration and other vision related problems. Therefore it's highly recommended a UV coating is applied to your lenses to protect your eyes.

For further protection from the sun's harmful UV rays, you may want to try Transition or regular tinted lenses

Scratch-resistant coating

Glasses are always exposed to the elements which can result in general wear and tear to the frame and lenses. A scratched lens will often affect your vision leading to possible eye strain and discomfort. Fortunately, a scratch resistant coating can be applied to your lenses ensuring your lenses remain free from light scratches caused by daily wear and tear.

If you do happen to have a badly scratched lens on an existing pair of glasses you may be interested to know that your lenses can be replaced at a very cost effective rate. See our lens replacement service for more information.

Anti-reflective coating

Prescription lenses are highly polished to give a smooth finish but as a result this polished surface produces reflections when light hits the surface, this could be in the form of sunlight during the day, artificial lights at home or at work, from digital devices, or perhaps the head lamps of cars while driving at night, all of which can be troublesome to the wearer causing visual fatigue as well as being extremely irritating. To eliminate this problem, an anti-reflective coating can be applied to the lens surface to provide you with clear defined vision during the night or day.

Note: a lens with an anti-reflective coating applied will appear to have a very pale coloured tint (usually green, pink or blue) under some lighting conditions, this is perfectly normal and unnoticeable during normal day to day wear.

Hydrophobic & EMR treatment

Anti-reflective coatings also include an additional hydrophobic and oleophobic layer (EMR) that repels water and grease, making them easier to keep clean. Hydrophobic technology allows water to run off your lenses (aka beading) without any unwanted water marks.

*All lenses with the exception of 1.5 and 1.56 clear lenses have 100% UV protection as standard.
